The
Second Half: Sunday
You would never know
this, but the
second half of the tv season technically started on January 26th. It's
been 4 months since the season started, and another 4 until it ends. So
on this momentus occasion, I'm going to look at the networks night by
night
and assess what's worked, what hasn't, and what's to come. The ratings
are based on the w/e Jan 18
7pm
The
big story
at 7pm was the rise of "60 Minutes," (10, 47), which is up for the
first
time in years and is smashing everything in the slot, from "Dateline"
(42,
67) to 'Funniest Videos" (73, 83) to "King of The Hill" (68, 41) to
"Smallville"
(129, 129). Nothing even comes close.
8pm
Once
again,
the big story at 8pm is the rise of CBS and the fall of everybody else
but the WB. "Cold Case" seemes to be growing by the week and now ranks
13th in viewers, although 49th in adults. It's CBS's biggest show in
the
timeslot in 6 seasons and is killing the second place "The Simpsons"
(23,
14), which is losing viewers every week, and timeslot-mate "The Bernie
Mack Show," (47, 29), which is having a hard time even getting started.
As for NBC, "American Dreams" (61, 55) is off by 20%, while "10-8" (73,
76) on ABC started out quite strong, but collapsed leading up to the
series
finale. As for the WB, "Charmed" (106, 100) is still doing fine,
leading
the WB's charge on the night.
9pm
What
to say
about 9pm? There were more winners in the hour, but not really at the
same
time. "CI" (15,. 25) continues to win the hour, although CBS's movie
(16,
43) is nipping hard on its heels, just 100,000 viewers back on the
season.
"Alias" was pretty far down the line for ABC, ranking 65th on the
season,
but 44th in adults, while "Malcolm In The Middle" (51, 31) is purging
viewers,
giving lead-out "Arrested Development" (91, 60) nothing to crow about.
Over on the WB, "Tarzan" (120, 120) started out hot, but quickly faded,
while "The Surreal House" (109, 92) got off to a record start, nearly
ranking
as the net's top series in 18-49ers.
10pm
AOutside
of
CBS's movie winning the hour, "The Practice" (53, 48) is gaining back
critics
is not fans, while "Lyon's Den" (47, 53) ranked a bit higher, but too
far
below expectations to continue.

7pm:
Will
anything
change at 7pm? It's not likely, considering that everybody is sticking
with the same line-ups.
8pm:
The
wild card
at 8pm is "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," a special of which actually
beat a new "Law & OrdeR" is adults last November. That said, ABC is
positioned to take the number two spot on the night, behind CBS, but
ahead
of Fox. NBC will be fourth, with "Charmed" still solid. As for adults,
it'll be Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC and the WB.
9pm:
The
line-up
here is not changing at all, xcept that ABC might give "Karen Sisco" a
shot in the hour in March. With no change comes minimal ratings
movement.
10pm:
NBC'll
finally
have a place in the hour when "Crossing Jordan" returns in March. Even
so, ABC is already said to be renewing "The Practice" for next season,
so it'll be "Jordan" who'll have to prove her worth.
What'll hit big this
spring? Talk
about it on the message
board!
