What The Summer Ratings Say
You may think I'm crazy, but if you listen very closely, the summer ratings will talk to you. and no, I'm not crazy, just all hopped up on pain killers. Seriously though, over the next month, along with everything else at JustTV Talk, I'm going to explore what the summer ratings mean for the regular season.

Friday

CBS has been airing of mix of series on the night, with almost nothing doing well. Well, almost.
The good news is that "48 Hours" has been doing okay at 8pm, where it will stay this fall. As for the two new dramas "Hack" and "Robbery Homicide Division", CBS could have another "CSI," or another "The Fugitive." Your choice.

NBC has been winning Friday nights this summer, just as it will do during the regular season. Two hour editions of "Dateline" have been far and away the winner at 8pm and 9pm, while "SVU" is up about 10% at 10pm. The only question mark will be "Providence." Will the aging drama halt viewer erosion, or keep on going?

ABC has been doing well on Fridays so far this summer, at 8pm and 10pm. At 8pm, "Americas Funniest Home Videos" is on the upswing for the umpteenth time, while "20/20" is sometimes winning at 10pm. 9pm, meanwhile has been a mish mash of repeat specials and "Whose Line?" While "WL" is gaining ground, it won't be there this fall. The question is, will "That Was Then" be able to bridge the gap between the younger skewing "AFHV" and the older skewing "20/20" ? My guess is no, it won't.

Thought Mondays were a nightmare, Fox? Well, welcome to Fridays. You remember this night, right? You've set so many network lows on this night this summer that I've stopped counting. "The X-Files" does good to break 3.0mil viewers, while "Invasion Of The Hidden Cameras" isn't doing much better. So what is it airing this fall? More sci-fi shows like "Firefly" and "John Doe." While advance buzz on those series is actually good, on this night they won't do anything.

The UPN's movies have been down from last summer, but that depends more on what it's airing. Steady as she goes.

The WB's been doing well on Fridays this summer, great thanks to "Reba." And since she'll continue anchoring at 9pm this fall, I see no reason for the night to go anywhere but up.
