| Soap
Opera Ratings (week
ending April 21, 2002)
Nobody
ever
talks about daytime tv ratings, but why? How about this, it's entirely
depressing. Soaps are dying in the ratings, and it only gets worse,
except
for NBC. Yes, they're winning in daytime too. So today I'm going to
break
down some of the soap ratings to see where we stand. Keep in mind, many
soaps (especially NBC's) will see huge jumps in viewership soon as
schools
across the nation dismiss.

Most
of the
CBS soaps are seeing deep declines, but it's "General Hospital" that's
down the most. Why? I dunno. Don't watch it.

Things gets
even uglier in
women 18-49. While the other nets struggle to hold place, both NBC's
shows
increase. BTW, this is the second most important demo. The first is....

This
demo is
where the real gold is. Unfortunately, only one network is doing good
here:
NBC. Sitting high above the rest with an average rating of 2.9/21 in
this
extremely important demo. And during the summer, that number only
shoots
upwards. In fact, 9th rated overall, "Passions" is the number one soap
among teen girls. For most of last summer, it was one of the highest
rated
series on tv in this hard to reach demo. That's why it will be
assured
many years to come, while 57 year old stalwart "Guilding Light" may
soon
get the boot.
