Canadian
TV Ratings Every once in a while, I go over the Canadian ratings to let you see what's booming and what's bombing north of the border. Mostly, it's the American series that take the top spots, and many of the top 20 are identical to that of the US, with a few surprizing exceptions. Canadian has three networks, CTV and Global (private) and CBC (public, airing on Canadian and British programming). Could you imagine one network in the US owning the rights to all the CSI's, all the Law & Order's, Housewives, Lost, and American Idol? Well, that's CTV up here. Another surprising fact- "The Amazing Race" is our number one series. Here's the top 20 from the week of April 4-10, 2005. Since the American market is 12 times as large as the english speaking Canadian market, I've also given an American equivalent from the same week. Obviously, the American networks would kills for these kind of ratings. While cable is making an impact here, the networks (well, CTV really) is still insanely popular because it has all of the big series. Global, like NBC, used to have "Friends," but has really suffered since it went off the air. Cable networks in the US also have a much bigger budget so they are able to make credible original series, while cable networks here rely mostly on low budget stuff or repeats of American stuff that doesn't play as well here.
