What Love Overcomes Ch 5

2 weeks later: I know I keep skipping ahead in time, I don't know why but for the story to work, time must move. :-) Just to give you an idea of where we're at it's late May 2001. Helena has visited Gia three more times each threat basically the same as the first. No other serious events have happened, Gia and Stefan are growing to like each other, but still have a long road to go. There has been no change in the feelings of Liz, Emily, Taggert, and Lydia about Nikolas and Gia's marriage.

Gia is sitting nervously in the doctor's office waiting for her turn to go in. She is a nervous wreck. Gia started feeling weird about a week ago and she's late, but she just contributed that to all the stress she's been under since she and Nikolas got married. It's not like a lot of people made it easy for her at first, and some still aren't, that's why she thought it was stress until 2 days ago. She just decided to take a pregnancy test just in case...to her surprise it was positive. The result of that is Gia has been in a total panic for the last couple of days. If it's true, and Gia is carrying Nikolas's child, of course she'll be happy, but with all of these warnings from Helena, she can't help but be a little frightened.

Nurse: Gia Campbell?

Gia stands, and follows the nurse into the exam room. Gia, trying to keep some privacy for the time being at GH, used Campbell instead of Cassadine. Once in the room, the nurse takes her temperature, checks her blood pressure all the normal stuff and then leaves before the doctor comes in, which gives Gia another minute to think.

Gia: Please, no matter what the result, let everything be okay.

*********************************************

Gia is pacing back and forth across the room waiting for Dr. Neumann to come in with her test results. She swears the long wait in the office after the exam is done purposely by doctors just to add to women's nerves. Finally, though, Dr. Neumann comes in, startling Gia.

Dr. Neumann(smiling): Calm down, it's just me.
Gia: Just you? I'm sorry, but you're the one who holds the answer to whether my life is changed forever.
Dr. Neumann: Okay. So, you ready?
Gia(sitting down): As ready as I'll ever be.
Dr. Neumann: Your pregnancy test is positive. Congratulations.

Whatever Dr. Neumann said after that was lost to Gia. She was sitting in a trance, not quite sure she heard the doctor correctly, but yet knows she did. A million thoughts go through her mind, but especially fear. Once Helena finds out there's no telling what she'll do. Nik can defend himself and Gia herself, but an innocent baby...what was she going to do?
Dr. Neumann: Gia?
Gia: What?
Dr. Neumann: Are you all right?
Gia(not too convincing): I'm fine. Just great. (putting her head in her hands) Perfect.
Dr. Neumann(concerned): I take it this was not a planned pregnancy.
Gia: Not exactly.
Dr. Neumann: Here is some information that discusses all of your options.
Gia: I'm keeping the baby, Dr. Neumann.
Dr. Neumann: I just give all of my patients with unplanned pregnancies information about all of their options, teenage and adult.
Gia: Well, my husband should be happy, at least I think her will be.
Dr. Neumann: Your husband?
Gia: Yes. I'm married to Nikolas Cassadine. I just used my maiden name Campbell to keep some privacy. You have to promise you won't say anything, especially considering Stefan works here.
Dr. Neumann: Don't worry, I believe in strict doctor/patient confidentiality.
Gia: Thank you. So, when am I due?
Dr. Neumann (reading over the papers): Well, according to the test, you're approximately 6 weeks along. That would make the due date in the middle of January. Your actual due date is January 19, but the baby will probably be born 2 weeks before or after the due date like most babies are.
Gia: So basically I should keep my calendar open from New Year's to Valentine's Day?
Dr. Neumann(laughing): That's one way of looking at it, yes. Here are a couple prescriptions for prenatal vitamins. Do you have any specific questions right now?
Gia: Not that I can think of at the moment. I'm just still in total, utter, and complete shock. Although the second I get home I'll probably think of a million questions...(sighs, trying not to get emotional)... What am I gonna do?
Dr. Neumann(handing her a tissue): What's the matter?
Gia: I'm bound by marriage to Helena Cassadine. (sighs) But, I'll deal with it.
Dr. Neumann: There is one thing I am concerned about, however.
Gia: What? Is something the matter with the baby?
Dr. Neumann: No. But your blood pressure is a bit high.
Gia: Yeah, well, you try running off and eloping with a guy you've been dating for a few months but are totally in love with and come home to share your wonderful news only to be yelled at by practically everyone you know telling you what a horrible mistake you made and see how high your blood pressure is.
Dr. Neumann: You have to keep your blood pressure down and your stress levels low. I know Cassadines aren't known for that kind of thing, but you start making them known for that. I'm very serious, Gia. I've seen women go into premature labor, have problems with their pregnancies, and sometimes even lose their babies because of the stress they put themselves under. I don't want anything to happen to you or your baby.
Gia: I promise, I'll try to stay calm and steer clear of anything stressful. Even if that means locking myself in my bedroom and hiding under the covers until my water breaks. (checks her watch) I have to go. I'm having dinner at my mother-in-law's...(shakes her head) that still sounds weird. And there's things I have to take care of at home before I go there.
Dr. Neumann: Okay. I want you here in 2 weeks when we will do an ultrasound.
Gia: I'll get to see the baby?
Dr. Neumann(smiles): And hear it's heartbeat.
Gia(smiles): Oh, wow. (puts her hands over her mouth) I'm gonna be a Mommy? That's going to take some getting use to.
Dr. Neumann: Not to much actually. I got use to the idea of being a Mom shortly after I learned I was expecting my son and it was even more wonderful four years later when I learned I was expecting my second son. It's the most wonderful feeling in the world.
Gia: Thanks, I'll see you in a couple weeks.

On her way out, Gia runs into the nurse who was in with her before Dr. Neumann came into the examining room. The nurse wasn't on her way in, but looked like she had just been camped outside the door for a while, pretending to read some files. Not having time to question her, Gia apologizes and excuses herself. When Gia gets into the elevator and is out of sight, the nurse looks around her and makes sure no one else is watching. She sneaks into a supply room and takes out her cellphone.

Nurse: Helena Cassadine, please. (pauses) Just tell her it's the nurse from the hospital. Hello, Mrs. Cassadine it's Jessica Burns. ..... The nurse you paid off to give you a report on Gia Cassadine! I'm sorry Mrs. Cassadine, it's just very hard not to get frustrated when you're being paid off to break the rules of a job you cherish.

Helena: What happened at Gia's doctor's appointment?
Nurse Jessica: You're suspicions for the doctor's visit were correct. She is pregnant with your grandson's child.
Helena(not happy): I see.
Nurse: Would you like to know any specifics? Like the due date or how far along she is?
Helena: No, I'll question Miss Gia about that when I see her. Is there anything else I need to know? Any potential problems with the pregnancy?
Nurse Jessica: Dr. Neumann is concerned about Gia's high blood pressure and afraid of any stress that could come her way.
Helena: Thank you very much, Ms. Burns. Your help has been greatly appreciated. You can meet Andreas at the launch at 5:20 on the dot. He will pay you the rest of your money.
Nurse Jessica: Why such a specific time?
Helena: Do you want that money or not?
N.Jessica(hesitant): Yes. I'll be there at exactly 5:20.
Helena: Good. Again, thank you for your services.

********************************************

Gia walks into the cottage and collapses on the couch, trying to let the information she'd learned today sink in completely. She's actually pregnant...the thought still wasn't sinking in. When is she going to tell Nikolas? How is he going to react? Gia is taken out of her thoughts when Calypso walks over to her and puts her head in Gia's lap. She does what any good dog would do and just listens to her owner's problem while getting her head rubbed, not a bad deal for her.

Gia(rubbing Calypso's head): Hey, girl. I see you didn't wreck the place, that's a good thing. What am I going to, Calypso? Will Nikolas be happy about a baby? I mean, we haven't really got the chance to discuss kids yet, and the only time we brought it up it was briefly and we decided to wait a few years. (leaning her forehead against Calypso's) What am I gonna do, girl? (sits up) First of all, I guess I should stop talking to a dog like it's a person.

Suddenly, Calypso jumps up and runs to the front door and starts barking. Gia peaks out from behind the curtain and sees Helena on the porch, looking unnerved by the barking.

Gia(sighing): Go lay down, Calypso. (opening the door) What do you want, Granny Hells?
Helena(letting herself in): Shouldn't you be saying, Great-Granny Helena? I hear that you are...expecting.
Gia(trying to keep her cool): What makes you think that?
Helena: Don't try to lie to me. I know you went to the doctor's office today and found out that you are pregnant.
Gia: How? Are you having me followed?
Helena: Maybe, maybe not. The fact is, you are carrying Nikolas's child, my great-grandchild, and that doesn't sit well with me. I want you out of this family, not to add to it. I'm going to give you one last chance. I'll pay you to leave, but this is your last chance.
Gia: Helena, I'm not leaving Nikolas, especially now that I'm pregnant with our child. A child that was conceived in love.
Helena: Fine, have it your way. But you will be sorry and you will pay the ultimate price.
Gia: Get her, Calypso!

After Gia yelled that command, you've never seen Helena Cassadine run so fast. She closed the front door just as Calypso got to it. Helena raced to her waiting car, more angry with Gia now than ever. Inside the house, Gia is sitting at the bottom of the steps thinking about what Helena just said. Helena wouldn't kill an innocent baby....would she? Gia places her hands on her stomach, not sure who she's really trying to reassure, the baby or herself.
Gia: Don't worry, baby, Mommy's not gonna let anything happen to you. I promise.

******************************************** Spencer home......

Nikolas, Gia, Laura, and Lulu are sitting around the table eating dinner. Nikolas has been asking Lulu questions about school and Laura about the her job counseling at a clinic but Gia has stayed silent. She hasn't said a word unless someone asked her something and even then she gave short answers, which is completely out of character for her.

Lulu: Gia, why are you so quiet? You always talk.
Gia: I know, Lu, I guess I'm just tired.
Lulu (good enough for a 6 year old): Oh, okay. You should go to bed earlier. That's what my Mommy makes me do when I'm tired.
Gia: Okay. I'll go to bed extra early tonight. (Nik and Laura don't look so convinced.) Really, guys, I'm fine.
Laura: Leslie Lu, how about you help me get the dessert, okay?
Lulu: 'Kay, Mommy. (runs to the kitchen)
Laura: We'll be right back.
Nik: Gia, you've been tired a lot lately, are you sure you're all right? Maybe you should see a doctor.
Gia: No! I mean, I've been jogging with Calypso and you know how fast that dog likes to run. Also, my allergy medicine makes me tired. Besides I went to the doctor today anyway.
Nik: For what?
Gia: Summer is right around the corner. You know what that means: ragweed, hayfever, wheezing, pollen...my allergies go crazy. So other than me doing a bunch of sneezing, I'm fine. You worry too much.
Nik: I know, but with Helena running around, I have to watch out for those I love. (cellphone rings) Hello? Hold on. (to Gia) I'll be right back, I'm it's L&B. Tell my mother I just snuck upstairs for a minute to talk.
Gia: Okay.

Allergies? Yeah, Gia real brave there. Gia didn't want to tell him about the baby yet, she had to think of a special way and the best time. She hears the doorbell ring and since Laura was still in the kitchen, Gia answers it. She comes face to face with Luke Spencer.

Luke: Hello. May I ask what you are doing at my home? (oh, Luke and Laura are together. The Luke/Flea thing never happened.)
Gia: Having dinner.
Laura(walking back into the living room with Lulu): Did I hear the doorbell, Gia?
Lulu: Daddy! (runs to Luke)
Luke(catching Lulu in his arms): There's my princess. How are you, Angelface?
Lulu: Good, Daddy.
Laura: Gia, where's Nikolas?
Gia: He got a call from Ned. L&B business. He just went upstairs to take it.
Luke: Gia? Oh, you're Baldy the Cop's sister.
Gia: The name's Gia, Mr. Spencer.
Luke: No one calls me Mr. Spencer, Braids. Everyone calls me Luke.
Gia: Well, everyone calls me Gia.
Luke: Everyone but me, Braids.
Laura: Luke, remember when I told you Nikolas eloped?
Luke: Oh, you married Prince Nikky. I hear the Black Widow and Count Vlad are pretty steamed about that, huh?
Gia: Helena especially. But Stefan's slowly coming around.
Laura: Did you eat anything at the club, Luke?
Luke: No. I would've been home hours ago if Claude hadn't misplaced a whole case of my good whiskey. I swear...
Laura: You've been complaining about Claude for years, if he's that bad, why don't you fire him?
Luke: I do, but he always comes back.
Laura: Well, I'll go get you a plate.
Lulu: I'll help, Mommy. (they go into the kitchen)
Luke: So, Braids, exactly how much trouble is Helena giving you?
Gia: What do you mean? She's just come by the house a few times and told me to leave Nikolas. She even offered me money, could you believe that. She took out her checkbook and told me to pick an amount.
Luke: What are you still doing in town then?
Gia: I love Nikolas and no amount of money could ever make me leave him. It's just...(shakes her head)..forget it.
Luke: I never forget it when it comes to Helena. It's just what?
Gia: It's her other threats that bother me. Look, I'd rather not discuss this any further.
Luke: Fine. But if you ever need help with Helena or getting away from her, come to me. I've had more than enough experience dealing with her.
Gia: I'll most definitely keep that in mind.
