TEASER

INT. DANCE CLUB

A posh, hip hop type of club. Lights of all colors shine down from the ceiling. A live band performs.

AT A TABLE

sits Mark, a man in his thirties with uncombed hair and a wild gaze. He watches the band while sipping his drink.

Behind him, Lana, a woman with golden hair and a killer smile, sits at another table. She’s watching him.

MARK

looks about, worried. He’s waiting for something. A man appears and sits at the table. Mark relaxes.

MARK
About time. I was beginning to worry.

MAN
Do not worry. I would not let you down.

MARK
Yeah, well, when you know what I know.

MAN
You’re information will prove invaluable to us. Rest assured, you will be taken care of.

MARK
That’s all I’m asking. So, where am I going?

ZOOM

across to Lana, who turns her ear towards the two men.

MAN
(o.s.; filtered)
We’re taking you to an artificial surface environment.

MARK
(o.s.; filtered)
Never been there before.

MAN
(o.s.; filtered)
It’s filled with people wanting to hold onto the old ways.

MARK
(o.s.; filtered)
Gee, swell.

MAN
(o.s.; filtered)
It’s the best place for you.

BACK TO

the table. The man throws some change onto the table. He stands up.

MARK
We’re leaving now?

MAN
Yes. It’s imperative that nobody finds you.

Mark sighs. Stands up. The two men head for the doors and leave. Lana takes a sip of her drink, then follows.

INT. SHAFT CORRIDOR

The two men stands before a doorway.

MAN
Prepare yourself. It’s quite different from everything else you have experienced.

MARK
Let’s just get it over with.

The Man hits a button, and the doorway slides open. They walk through. As the door begins to close, a clawed, furry hand reaches out and stops it.

INT. ARTIFICIAL SURFACE ENVIRONMENT - NIGHT

The place is overwhelming. It looks like a typical 21st century small town. Houses, a school, movie store, grocery store, etc.

Mark and the Man stand on a hill overlooking the town. Mark is gaping. He really can’t believe his eyes.

MARK
This place is unreal!

MAN
Isn’t it, though? There are hundreds of these places, all living in make believe land. They even interact with each other, pretending to be one great big country. Their school football teams even compete against each other. It’s disgusting.

MARK
It’s paradise!

MAN
It’s not reality. These people are fooling themselves.

MARK
At least they’re happy.

MAN
They’re ignorant. Then again, ignorance is bliss.

He starts down the hill. Mark follows him.

EXT. STREET

Mark and the Man walk at a brisk pace.

MARK
Why are we going so fast?

MAN
Because I don’t want these people seeing two strangers walking down the street in the middle of...night.

MARK
You mean these people don’t know?

MAN
It would kinda defeat our purpose. You are not to go out, not to look out, not to be seen. You’ll be living with a man named Nate. He’s a friend of mine.

MARK
And how long do I have to keep this up?

MAN
Until I think it’s safe.

They reach a house and the Man stops.

MAN
This is it.

MARK
Now what?

MAN
Now you go inside and stay there.

MARK
I just go inside.

MAN
Yes.

Mark looks at him, then heads for the house. He walks up the door, reaches uncertainly for the knob. He looks back at the street. The Man is gone.

Mark sighs and heads inside.

Across the street, a woman stares out her window. Then, she drops the shades.

INT. HOUSE

The house is dark. Mark looks around, trying to locate the light switch.

MARK
Where’s that button?

He finds a small switch protruding from the wall and shrugs. He flips it. Nothing.

MARK
Typical. Nothing ever works. If that’s actually supposed to work.

He glances around him. He’s in the foyer. A closet is to the right of him. In front of him is the living room.

It’s furnished with a couch, and something that resembles a La-Z-Boy. A fireplace rests against one wall, unlit. A large vase sits on a table.

MARK
Boy, I’m so glad I decided to do this.

He starts to head to the hallway when a scraping sound stops him. He turns, looks to the foyer. Nothing.

MARK
Hello? Nate, is that you?

He goes to the door, starts to open. Then, he remembers the man’s words. He looks around for a push pad.

MARK
Okay, where’s the locking panel?

Then he spots it. Or, well, a normal lock.

MARK
(disgusted)
Oh, how dreadfully ancient. These people actually feel safe with these things?

He still locks the door.

Crash!

Mark turns, his heart racing.

MARK
Hello?

He steps back into the living room, glances down the dark and suddenly scary hallway. He gulps. He walks to the hallway, and almost trips and falls. Three steps lead down to the hallway floor. Mark sighs and carefully descends.

He looks around. A few photos hang on the wall. One has been knocked down. Mark bends down and picks it up. The glass has been shattered. He presses it against the wall and turns. The picture falls and breaks. Mark winces.

He comes to the first door. He pushes it open.

INT. SPARE BEDROOM

It really is spare. Only a bed is in this bedroom.

INT. HALLWAY

Mark closes the door. He walks to another room. He doesn’t notice the large, hulking thing enter the hallway behind him.

INT. BEDROOM

This bedroom is decorated with pink. Pink walls, bed sheets. A little girl’s room. Stuffed animals and dolls line every corner.

Mark enters, looks around. He sits on the bed. Grabs a little giraffe and looks at it curiously.

MARK
These are some weird people.

Yet there’s a gentle tone in his voice. A look of compassion on his face. He sets the giraffe down stands up. He walks to the door, casts a final glance behind him.

INT. HALLWAY

Mark closes the door, sighs. The creature is no where to be seen. He starts down the hallway, then stops. He sighs and turns around.

Face to face with a horrible abomination! The creature lets out a primal roar and grabs Mark around the neck.

Mark is lifted into the air, his feet kicking. The creature is bathed in darkness, so we see nothing. But Mark gets an eye full. He tries to scream, but the creature’s grasp is firm.

Mark reaches into his pocket, fumbling to grab something. His legs stop flailing. We can tell that the life is going out of him.

He manages to pull out what looks like a laser pen. He hits a button, and the pen begins to hum. Mark hits the button again, and a bright red beam shoots out, slicing into the creature’s chest. It screams in rage and drops Mark.

Mark scrambles up and races past the creature. It turns, roaring. Bounds after him.

Mark reaches the living room, but trips over something and collapses onto the table, knocking the vase over.

The vase hits the floor and breaks, exposing Nate’s decapitated head!

Mark sees it and screams. He gets up just as the beast bounds in and lands. The beast grabs Mark’s leg and begins to pull. Mark screams and grabs for anything. His hands grabs a fire poker.

Mark turns, aims for the creature’s eye. He slams it home. The creature lets go and roars in pain. It fumbles, falling over the couch.

Mark stands, heads for the door. His legs are cut in many, many places. But before he can reach the door, a large shape jumps through the window, tackling Mark to the ground.

EXT. HOUSE

We see the broken window, and the beast hunched over. Mark’s screams get softer and more gurgled as the chewing sounds get louder.

ACT ONE

INT. GUARD HQ

This place is very busy. Human and mutants are getting processed into the system.

INT. MARIA’S OFFICE

Maria sits at her desk, going over a report. The door chimes.

MARIA
Come in.

The door slides open and Guard William enters. He stands at attention.

MARIA
(sighs)
At ease.

WILLIAM
Ma’am, this just arrived. It’s marked urgent.

He hands Maria a pad. She grabs it and gives it a cursory glance.

MARIA
(surprised)
This is from the artificial surface environment?

WILLIAM
Yes, ma’am. I guess that’s why it came to me.

MARIA
Because you lived in one, right?

WILLIAM
Yes, ma’am.

Maria begins to read the report. Her face grows disgusted the more she reads.

MARIA
Oh my God. This is horrible. How could anyone do this?

WILLIAM
I don’t know, ma’am.

MARIA
Whoever did this is a desensitized little shit. Don’t you agree?

WILLIAM
Yes, ma’am.

MARIA
Has anything been touched or removed from the crime scene?

WILLIAM
No. The local sheriff sent it to us ASAP. He said that he didn’t have the resources to deal with something like this.

MARIA
I’m afraid we don’t, either. Aside from you, everybody grew up in the shafts. Plus, we see some nasty things here, but nothing that compares to this.

WILLIAM
So what do you propose, ma’am?

MARIA
Call in professionals.

INT. LAB

The team is up and about. Sarge and Cleo are sparring while Hel sits at the table, sipping her coffee and reading a pad.

HEL
Hmm. Can you believe this? Drake the Test Tube was caught today and imprisoned.

Sarge ducks one of Cleo’s blows, slams her fist into Cleo’s ribs.

SARGE
The one who’s been selling drugs like Pelonthetamine and Drucomian?

Cleo slugs Sarge in the jaw, and she goes down.

CLEO
Don’t remind me about the Pelonthetamine. Bad memories.

Sarge sweeps Cleo’s legs out from under her and she goes down. Sarge jumps to her feet.

HEL
Yes, that Test Tube.

Cleo flips in the air, kicking both her legs out. They come within inches of Sarge’s face. She lands and throws a right then a left hook at Sarge, who deftly dodges them.

CLEO
He isn’t a real test tube, is he?

HEL
(laughing)
Of course not! They only call him that because of the drugs he sells. He’s actually a mutant rat.

CLEO
Oh. I was worried there for a moment. When test tubes are mob bosses, you know that the world is going down the drain.

Mauser enters from the mechanics bay. He wipes his hands off with a towel.

MAUSER
Well, my project is coming along nicely.

SARGE
And what would that be?

MAUSER
A new weapon to use against the Bailies.

HEL
Always good news. How goes the Shaft Racer front?

MAUSER
Almost done.

Sarge and Cleo stop sparring and grab towels. They sit down at the table.

SARGE
You’re getting pretty good, Cleo.

CLEO
Thanks.

HEL
Just don’t let it get to your head.

CLEO
I’m not.

There’s a chime. The team looks up.

HEL
Now, who could that be?

SARGE
We’re not expecting anybody. In fact, we never expect people.

Hel stands up, arms her gauntlet. Cleo and Sarge do the same thing. They make their way to the door. They assume fighting positions.

CLEO
This may just be me, but usually bad guys don’t ring the bell.

MAUSER
(at the computer)
Cleo’s right. It’s Maria and a Guard.

The team relaxes. Hel backs up.

HEL
Let them in.

The wall bubbles and moves like Jell-O as Maria and William enter.

MARIA
About time.

HEL
Sorry. We just weren’t expecting you.

MARIA
I know. And I apologize. But this is of the upmost importance. There’s been a murder. Well, several.

INT. LAB - LITTLE LATER

Everyone is gathered around the table. From the looks on their faces, they just finished reading the reports.

HEL
This is... This is...

SARGE
There’s not a word to describe this.

CLEO
I haven’t seen anything as horrible as this anywhere. Here, or back in the 21st century.

MARIA
You see why I came to you. We’re not equipped to deal with this.

HEL
I don’t even think we are.

MARIA
Please, Hel. You must help me.

WILLIAM
We must bring this person to justice.

SARGE
Where would we begin? I mean, how do you begin?

MARIA
By looking at the crime scene.

From their expressions, nobody wants to.

INT. HARBOR COVE - ARTIFICIAL SURFACE ENVIRONMENT - DAY

The team, plus Maria and William, have gathered on the same hill that the Man and Mark stood just yesterday.

A police car pulls up. The door opens and Sheriff Davis steps out.

DAVIS
I’m so glad you came. I’m Sheriff Roy Davis.

MARIA
I’m Maria, head of the Guard. This is William, a trusted Guard. And this is Hel, Sarge, and Cleopatra. They’re a Voice team.

DAVIS
You really pulled out all the stops, didn’t you?

MARIA
For a crime this serious, I had to.

DAVIS
I guess I better take you to the crime scene.

He gets back into the car. Maria, Cleo, and William follow. Hel and Sarge hang back.

DAVIS
What’s wrong?

HEL
We’ve had a bad experience in a car similar to this.

SARGE
Really bad.

DAVIS
I’m a really good driver.

Still, there’s hesitation.

SARGE
Then again, it was also pretty fun.

HEL
(smiling)
Yeah.

They hop in the car.

INT. POLICE CRUISER - LATER

The small group is bunched in the car. Cleo looks out the window, remembering days gone by. Children get on buses, people go about their lives as if the Bailies don’t exist.

HEL
(softly)
This is what we’re fighting for. So people can live like this.

EXT. NATE’S HOUSE

Police have it surrounded. News media are parked outside. Yellow police tape crisscrosses the house.

The police cruiser pulls up and the gang gets out. This causes a stir amid the media. Maria, William, Hel, Sarge, and Cleo aren’t exactly dressed appropriately.

SARGE
Man, this place is so different.

CLEO
Not to me. This is how I grew up.

DAVIS
In here.

He ducks under the police tape. Maria and William follow suit. Hel, Sarge, and Cleo just flip over it.

INT. LIVING ROOM

What’s in here is beyond horror. Mark’s body has been ripped apart. His torso, minus arms and head, lies on the floor. It’s been ripped open.

The heart, half eaten, lays next to the body. Fluids cover the floor around it. We can see little veins inside.

The intestines have been hung up around the room like Christmas lights. They drip internal fluids. Flies buzz around them.

The inside of the torso is hollow. All the organs minus the ones just mentioned, are gone. Mark’s decapitated head is on the poker, leaning against the wall.

His cranium has been ripped off, and part of his brain has been eaten. Puddles of brain tissue rests on the floor.

A large teddy bear sits in the La-Z-Boy. It’s arms have been ripped off, and replaced with Mark’s. They have been sewn on.

His feet have been cut up. His toes line the table in jars. One foot has been hung by the fireplace, like a stocking. The other one is gone.

The team enters, and they all go weak in the knees.

WILLIAM
Oh god.

And he pukes. The vomit pours out of his mouth in a never ending stream, splattering against the floor and the wall. Part of it drips from his mouth.

Maria simply turns and leaves.

Hel, Sarge, and Cleo are somewhat cool. They all have horrified expressions on their faces, and Sarge looks like she’s about to join William.

Cleo just stands there, a blank expression on her face. Finally:

CLEO
I thought you said there were three victims?

DAVIS
(nods)
I don’t think you want to see those.

HEL
We have to.

INT. PINK BEDROOM

The door opens and the team steps inside. This room is just as bad as the last.

Nate’s body is nailed spread eagled to the wall, cut open from one end to the next. His heart and kidneys have been nailed inside.

His intestines have been spread across the room like some kind of horrific, gory maze.

His head rests on the headboard of the bed, mouth open in a silent scream. Blood has poured down the headboard and onto the pink sheets, staining them.

The rest of Nate’s internal organs have been positioned in various places in the room. On the back of the door is a lung, nailed in place. Resting on a chair is the other lung along with his liver.

But in the center of the room, sitting in a jar atop a table, is the most horrific thing. Nate’s penis and balls are in the jar. The jar itself is filled with blood.

Davis appears behind the trio and closes the door.

INT. HALLWAY

Davis sighs, shakes his head.

DAVIS
I think that’s enough.

They all seem to want to agree with that. But they also know that they have to finish what they started.

EXT. BACKYARD

The final travesty resides back here. It’s the man’s body, or what remains of it. The organs have once again been ripped out. But it’s different back here among the patio furniture.

The man’s body(with it’s head attached) is propped up on a lawn chair. The chest has been cut open, and cleaned out. In it’s place is a stuffed tiger.

Both of the man’s eyeballs are missing. They can be found in a glass, floating in what appears to be iced tea.

The kidneys are places on the grill, burnt to a crisp. Whoever did this wanted a barbecue.

The heart is hanging from a tree, an arrow piercing it. But it seems as if half of it is missing. That’s because it is. The other half is on the ground, stomped and squished.

And the intestines have been used in a party like manner yet again. Sections of it hang from the trees, nailed to the walls, placed on the table.

The man’s feet have been lopped off. One has been put in the bird feeder. In fact, a bird is ripping off the flesh as we speak.

The other one is gone. Nowhere to be seen.

In the man’s right hand is a can of beer.

EXT. NATE’S HOUSE

The team walks out silently. A pale Maria and even paler William sit on the curb. Hel, Sarge, and Cleo join them. Nobody says a word. They sit there, quietly. Faces blank.

INT. POLICE PRECINCT

The group walks in, hassled by reporters. Two officers push the reporters back and close the doors. Davis leads the group to the briefing room.

INT. BRIEFING ROOM

The group comes in and sits down. Still quiet. Davis paces at the front.

DAVIS
I told you it wasn’t going to be pretty.

He sighs, sits down.

DAVIS
I wish I had never gone into that house. Those images will haunt my dreams for the rest of my life.

CLEO
(quietly)
I wasn’t expecting that.

MARIA
None of us did. None of us did.

WILLIAM
(stammering)
I-I thought... I thought I could...

He trails off.

HEL
I know what we saw was horrible, but we have a job to do. We have to bring the killer or killers to justice.

SARGE
How? I mean, I read the report. No clues. No fingerprints. No blood. Whoever did that was good.

MARIA
But they only used very limited technology. That was one of the reasons we were called in to help.

DAVIS
That’s right. Most of our technology is outdated. The people don’t like using it. Reminds them too much of the truth. Of the horrors of outside life.

SARGE
They were reminded pretty good today.

DAVIS
Not as much as you think. The information we gave the press was very little. They don’t know about the organ arrangement.

HEL
Don’t let them. It’ll cause panic.

CLEO
Panic is good at this point. Shouldn’t they be warned that some maniac is on the loose?

DAVIS
Trust me, we got that point across.

Again, he sighs. He does that a lot.

DAVIS
But it won’t help. Whoever did this has tremendous strength. He was able to break into a locked house to do this. We have no clues, no leads. No alibis. Two of the victims that were murdered don’t exist.

MARIA
What do you mean?

DAVIS
They’re not in our records. They don’t live in any of the artificial environments. And they’re not registered visitors. No passes or I.D.s on either of them.

HEL
So they snuck in. But why?

SARGE
Maybe they were on the run from somebody?

CLEO
Or they were conducting illegal business.

MARIA
It could be that. Lots of shaft scum hide out in the ASEs until the heat is off.

WILLIAM
It could be a lot of things.

HEL
Maria, the Guard have records on everybody, right?

MARIA
Yes.

HEL
Well, can’t you run some kind of test on the corpses to help identify them?

MARIA
Maybe. They’re in pretty bad condition.

HEL
Do it.

MARIA
I’ll bring a specialist in.

DAVIS
No.

They all look at him.

DAVIS
My town’s upset as it is. Bringing in another stranger from the outside with strange technology will not help matters.

HEL
But, Sheriff Davis--

DAVIS
That’s why I’ll have the bodies shipped to your lab. But I want it done quickly. Nate was a beloved citizen, and he needs to be buried.

MARIA
I understand.

She exits the room.

HEL
Our next step should be to interview people who were close to Nate. Any relatives?

DAVIS
Not in town. They live three towns over in Bayboro.

HEL
Okay. Where did he work?

DAVIS
He was a teacher at the high school.

HEL
Then we begin at the high school.

SARGE
Um...what’s a high school?

BLACKOUT
END OF ACT ONE

ACT TWO

EXT. HARBOR COVE HIGH - MID AFTERNOON

The sheriff’s police cruiser pulls up. The gang, minus Maria, steps out.

DAVIS
Now remember, this is a high school. Most of these kids believe that the shafts and Bailies are fiction. You have to play it cool.

HEL
Got it.

INT. COMMONS

A few kids sit at tables, talking and hanging out. But all attention goes to Hel, Sarge, and Cleo when they enter.

At a table sits Dan, the quarterback of the football team, his girlfriend Jeri, and his friend Tom.

DAN
Look at them!

TOM
(excited)
They’re practically nude!

DAN
Where are they from?

JERI
You didn’t hear? They’re from the shafts.

DAN
You’re kidding me?

JERI
‘Fraid not.

TOM
Wait a second. We have shaft trash in our town?

JERI
Mmm-hmm. Sheriff Davis asked them for help in the murder case.

DAN
I never knew shaft women got so...

JERI
Honey, they’re probably fake.

TOM
Let’s just hope they leave soon. The big game against Bayboro is this week, and we don’t want them to know that we have shaft trash here.

DAN
Shut up. They’re here to solve the murders. We can at least treat them with respect.

JERI
Why? It’s so obvious they have no respect for themselves dressing that way.

INT. PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE

The “shaft trash” along with Sheriff Davis stand in front of Principal Sheridan, a greying man in his fifties.

SHERIDAN
Davis, I don’t like this idea. Having them parade around the school just isn’t a good idea.
(to the team)
No offense.

SARGE
(seething with rage)
None taken.
(to Hel, quietly)
I can snap his neck in a second.

HEL
No.

DAVIS
Sheridan, it’s the only way to solve the murders. They have technology we don’t have. They have knowledge we don’t have.

SHERIDAN
Do you not remember the big fiasco that occurred 27 years ago? I do.

DAVIS
That was 27 years ago. It doesn’t matter now.

SHERIDAN
Who would they ask?

HEL
All we want to do is interview people close to Nate.

SHERIDAN
Why? You think that they might have killed him?

HEL
No. But they might know who did.

SHERIDAN
It was probably those two shaft people that got him into this mess and got him killed.

SARGE
Or it could’ve been one of your fine, upstanding citizens.

HEL
Sarge, cool it.

SHERIDAN
It’s not a good idea.

WILLIAM
With all do respect, sir, we’re this town’s last hope.

Sheridan sighs. (Seems a lot of people in this town sighs).

SHERIDAN
Fine. But one mistake, and I’ll have the lot of you kicked off.

HEL
Thank you, sir.

EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD

Practice is underway. While the players tackle each other, the cheerleaders try and do a pyramid. Coach Stanton is yelling his head off at the guys on the team.

Hel, Sarge, Cleo, William, and Davis exit out of the school building and heads towards the practice field.

DAVIS
We’ll start with Coach Stanton. He was Nate’s best friend. He knows a lot of things.

CLEO
Cool. But what was Sheridan talking about when he said the fiasco 27 years ago?

DAVIS
A few shaft people were mad when the Bailies disrupted power to all the shafts, yet the ASEs still had theirs. The ASEs tried to convince the shaft people that they had independent power supplies, but they wouldn’t listen. They were afraid the ASEs, or “normals” were planning to take them over. So a group of them, led by a man named Danzinger, took up arms and invaded a few ASEs. The fighting was brief but brutal. At the end, most of the people came to their senses, especially when the power came back on. But Danzinger and a few hardcore followers believed that the only reason the normals hadn’t invaded was because of his attack. So they pressed on, trying to take over everything. He was finally defeated by the Coalition Against Violent Disturbances, a group of people who banded together and stopped him. Danzigner was only 19 at the time. He’s 46 now, and still living in prison. The Coalition was disbanded five years afterwards when a mistake on their part started a shaft war.

WILLIAM
It was disbanded, but the Guard is based on lots of the Coalition’s principles.

DAVIS
Let’s hope they don’t make the same mistake the Coalition did.

The group has finally reached the practice field, and drawn a lot of attention. Coach Stanton walks towards them, mad.

STANTON
What in the hell, Davis! Are you crazy as a fucking cow! Why have you brought these whores here?

SARGE
Excuse me?

HEL
Sarge, don’t.

Sarge lets out a yell and flips into the air. On her way down she slams her feet into Stanton’s chest. Sarge lands, smiling.

STANTON
She’s a crazy bitch! Arrest her!

Davis helps Stanton to his feet.

DAVIS
Stanton, you deserved that one. Now, we need to talk.

Stanton glares at him.

INT. LOCKER ROOM

Stanton, Davis, William, Hel, and Cleo are inside. Sarge is presumably outside.

STANTON
You need to keep control of that one.

HEL
Don’t tell me what to do with my people, and I won’t tell you where to stuff it.

Stanton looks a little stunned, but recovers quickly.

STANTON
I know what this is about. It’s about Nate’s death. I don’t know nothing, and I ain’t gonna tell you nothing.

DAVIS
I can always take you down to the precinct. Keep you there for a few days until you had a chance to cool down.

STANTON
You wouldn’t dare make me miss the Bayboro game.

DAVIS
Bet me.

Stanton, for all the muscle and good looks on him, is humbled by Davis.

STANTON
Fine. Ask away.

HEL
Did Nate have any enemies, people that hated him?

STANTON
Of course not. This is a small, good town. Everybody likes everybody.

HEL
What about in other towns?

STANTON
No.

HEL
Any reason why two shaft people would be at his house?

STANTON
None that I can think of.

DAVIS
Are you sure?

STANTON
Well, Nate did spend a few months in the shafts. I guess he could’ve met somebody there.

HEL
(a little excited)
Do you know where he went?

STANTON
He was going to visit the Holy Nexus.

CLEO
What’s the Holy Nexus?

WILLIAM
It’s a chapel built around a place of mystical energies, at least that’s what the Nexians believe. The Shaft Builders made the temple themselves, and worshiped there everyday. They worshiped Nexa, a beautiful goddess. Supposedly, she sent one of the Shaft Builders visions on how to create the shafts and save humanity.

HEL
How do you know all this?

WILLIAM
Because I’m a Nexian.

HEL
Oh. Are there any places to stay near the Holy Nexus?

WILLIAM
Just one. The Temple of Holy Light. True believers go there and worship day and night. It’s the only livable place within miles of the Holy Nexus.

HEL
I guess that’s our only shot.

DAVIS
Thanks for your time, Stanton.

The group files out, leaving Stanton to fume.

INT. LOCKER ROOM - LATER

Practice is over, and Dan and Tom are undressing.

TOM
Did you see what that one girl did to Coach?

DAN
Yeah. That was awesome. I’ve never seen anyone with moves like that before.

TOM
Now that is someone I’d like to screw. All night and day.

DAN
You’re sick, man.

TOM
Yeah, like you and Jeri haven’t done the nasty before.

DAN
No, we haven’t. We both want to wait.

TOM
Sure, dude. I believe you.

The two are now dressed in towels, and head for the showers. We hear them laughing and joking with their other teammates, and the sounds of showers running.

A soft padding sound is heard faintly above the sound of running water. A low, guttural, growl. Then a fur covered, clawed hand sneaks into frame and rips the lock off of Dan’s locker. The paw then reaches in and pulls out all of his belongings.

The creature begins to rifle through them. Shoving aside pads and football gear, it rips into Dan’s school clothes. It shreds one of Dan’s pants pockets, revealing a wallet. The clawed hand grabs it.

No one in the shower notices. They’re all too busy laughing and talking and making obscene jokes about each other’s equipment.

EXT. LOCKER ROOM

The wallet is slipped under the door. Lana, dressed all in black, including shades, bends down and picks it up. We now see that she’s in her teens, with killer black hair. She puts the wallet in her jacket pocket and walks on.

EXT. HILL

The police cruiser pulls up and the gang gets out.

DAVIS
Are you sure this is the way to go?

HEL
Yeah. I just contacted Maria. The bodies were transported safely, but the specialist said it could take two days at the least. There are a lot of people in the underground and not much of a body.

DAVIS
I’d still feel better if at least one of you stayed.

SARGE
I will. I mean, I doubt the killer will strike again, but who knows?

HEL
Fine. But you’re not staying alone. William will stay with you. Cleo, you’ll come with me.

DAVIS
I can’t thank you enough for your help. I know that the townsfolk don’t really appreciate what you’re doing for them, but I do.

HEL
Thanks. I’ll keep in touch.

Hel and Cleo walk away from the group, headed for the door that will take them back to the shaft world.

DAVIS
I’m glad you decided to stay. My deputies are fine when it comes to small trouble, but this isn’t small trouble.

SARGE
I’m glad to help.

DAVIS
Well, it’s getting dark. We better head back. I got you two booked at the Harbor Cove Inn.

The trio climb back into the cruiser and drive down the hill.

INT. GUARD AUTOPSY ROOM

What’s left of Mark’s body is spread out on a steel table. Ory, the specialist, is preparing to go to work. Maria is also in the room.

ORY
This is quite a find, Maria.

MARIA
If you say so.

ORY
I have never seen any type of weapon or instrument cut so precisely.

MARIA
What does that mean?

Ory starts examining the body. Different lacerations, places where an appendage was cut off from the corpse.

ORY
It means that whoever did this is either using a weapon I haven’t seen before, or no weapon at all.

MARIA
What does that mean, Ory?

ORY
There are some documents that discuss creatures that could slice a man open without spilling a drop of blood.

MARIA
I hardly think that’s the case here. A creature did not do this. It’s too planned out. The way the bodies were arranged. No way.

ORY
I’m just giving you an opinion. It won’t be fact till I’ve examined the entire body.

MARIA
Just try and make it fast. The killer might strike again.

ORY
I’ll go as fast as I can.

INT. SHAFT TUNNEL/DESERT

Cleo and Hel, dressed in desert garb, trek through the desert-like environment. Cleo takes a swig from a water jug.

CLEO
Why exactly did the Nexians create a desert to their Holy Thing-a-ma-jig?

HEL
So that only those who are worthy can reach it. In this day and age, religion is a hard thing to come by and keep.

CLEO
I remember when people could worship who and what they wanted.
(thinks a minute)
Even then, it wasn’t all that great.

HEL
Let’s just get through here fast. We don’t want the Detaks to attack us.

CLEO
The Detaks?

HEL
A group of nomad mutants that can survive in any condition. They’re notorious for hiding out here.

CLEO
Great. Not only do I get to track through the desert, but I could also be attacked by a group of Star Wars rejects.

HEL
(laughs)
What did we ever do without you, Cleo?

EXT. HARBOR COVE INN

The main building is a two story log cabin situated near the woods. Behind the cabin, spread sporadically, are small cabins.

INT. CABIN

The door opens and Sarge, William, and Davis enter.

DAVIS
I’m sorry that I couldn’t get you separate cabins, but everything else is booked.

SARGE
It’s okay. This will do fine.

DAVIS
Guess I’ll check in with you people tomorrow. Have a good night.

SARGE
Bye.

Davis closes the door.

WILLIAM
Um, you can have the bed if you want.

SARGE
No, it’s okay. You can take it.

WILLIAM
You sure?

SARGE
Yeah. I like the floor better.

There’s an awkward beat. Sarge looks around the cabin. It’s decorated very nicely. A large rug takes up most of the space on the floor. The fire is crackling gently. A stuffed bear looms over one of the chairs in a corner. The ceiling slopes in a V shape. The bed is quite large. It could probably fit two people. It’s covers are a dark red, with the pillows a light green. Contrasting, yet oddly beautiful.

SARGE
Nice place.

She gives William a half smile. He gives her a dopey grin back.

INT. DESERT - NIGHT

Hel and Cleo have camped out underneath a rock outcropping. They’ve set up a portable air conditioner.

HEL
This is the way I see it. While one of us sleeps, the other one will stand guard. We’ll sleep three hours each. Wake up before dawn and get going. Should reach the Holy Nexus by mid-afternoon.

CLEO
And get booked in the Temple of Holy Light.

HEL
I doubt it. That’s just a starting point. We have to make this fast. People’s lives are depending on us.

CLEO
Ugh, you never let me have any fun.

HEL
I’ll take first watch. See ya in three.

CLEO
Night.

She lowers her head onto her pillow and falls fast asleep. Hel smiles.

INT. DESERT - LATER

Hel is curled up, her feet pressed against her chest. She looks like she’s about to fall asleep.

HREEEEEE!

Hel jerks awake, stands up. Activates her gauntlet and switches on her light. She swings her arm in a wide arc.

HEL’S POV

The desert stretches on forever, but the light doesn’t. What we can see is just empty space. No creatures.

Suddenly, there’s a shuffling noise somewhere in the darkness. Hel takes a step back, towards Cleo.

There’s another shrill cry as more shuffling is heard. Hel continues to back up. Suddenly--

A BEAST SPRINGS UP OUT OF THE GROUND BEHIND HEL!

The creature(a Detak) wraps its arms around Hel and squeezes.

HEL
(trying to yell)
Cleo!

But it comes out as a strangled cry.

In the distance, more Detaks are popping out of the ground. They have horns on their heads, with long sharp claws that seem to stretch forever. Tails with spikes on the end slither about.

Hel fires her gauntlet, taking a Detak down. Two jump up in front of her, and grab her wrist. They tear the gauntlet off.

Meanwhile, Cleo is sleeping peacefully.

More Detaks surround Hel. Suddenly, they part to allow what looks like the leader in. He has three horns instead of two, and instead of being a grey color, he’s more reddish gold.

HEL
So, you’re the head honcho.

But again, it comes out faint.

(Note: From now on, the leader will be called Goldie.)

Goldie is inches from Hel. He sniffs her, beginning with her face. His tongue shoots out and licks Hel’s cheek. It leaves a purple slime behind. Hel groans.

Goldie touches Hel on the stomach with one of its hands. It seems to smile. Hel doesn’t. Something begins to emerge from Goldie’s pelvic region. Something slimy and getting bigger.

Hel gasps.

HEL
I don’t think so!

She kicks out, hitting Goldie in the something. He groans and tumbles down. Hel kicks straight up, bashing in the head of the Detak that was detaining her.

She does a side flip and goes to grab her gauntlet, but a Detak knocks it away. Hel kicks the creature in its chin, sending it into a group of onrushing Detaks.

One Detak swings its tail at her. Hel grabs it below the spikes, and flings it into the air. Another Detak jumps in that one’s place. Hel slams her fist into the thing’s mouth, shattering its teeth.

HEL
You things aren’t very tough, are you?

She looks around, and sees that there are hundreds of Detaks.

HEL
But you have me outnumbered a billion to one.

She executes a flip and lands behind a Detak. Without turning, she plants her foot in the thing’s back. She then whips it around in a wide arc, smashing several Detaks together.

One Detak lowers its upper body, blowing snot out of its nose. It charges Hel like a bull. At the last second, Hel jumps to the side, grabs the thing’s horns, and slams them into another Detak. Both Detaks fall to the ground.

Hel grabs a Detak’s hand and snaps one of the claws off. She throws it like a knife, implanting it into a Detak’s heart.

Still holding onto Detak #1, she jumps over him and kicks another Detak in the chest. Her foot breaks through the bone and lodges itself in there. Organs and a slime-like substance spills out.

HEL
Ew.

A Detak charges her. She positions the dead Detak in front of her, deflecting the rushing Detak. Detak 1 is still trying to escape, but Hel holds on firmly.

She breaks off another one of its claws, and uses it to impale a Detak that got a little too close for comfort.

Hel manages to free her foot in time to slam it into a Detak’s face. The skull collapses and the brains pour out.

Using Detak 1 as a pole, she swings around him, her feet flying out, knocking all the Detaks back. She even causes a few chests and skulls to collapse.

Hel lands on the ground, her feet causing the desert to shift. But, wait. It’s not her feet. A pair of claws reach up and grabs Hel’s feet.

The Detak pulls Hel down. She screams, but still keeps her hold of Detak 1. Hel is halfway submerged in desert, but she still has fight left. She kicks her feet, trying to make a direct hit with the skull.

But this Detak is smart. He positions himself away from the kicking legs, and holds on with his tail.

HEL
Damn Detak!

She finally stops struggling, and lets herself be pulled down with the Detak. But Detak 1 also comes along for the ride.

Hel lands in an underground tunnel. She kicks immediately, crushing the Detak’s abdomen. She then goes to work on Detak 1.

When Hel pops back up from the hole, she has eight Detak claws positioned on her body, using slices of the Detak’s tail.

She throws her hand out, catching a Detak right in the face, causing him to go down. She grabs a claw and shoves it right into the thing’s face.

While still on the ground, she kicks backwards, causing the Detak to fall into the hole and land with a sickening crunch.

The crowd of Detaks part, and Goldie steps up.

HEL
Finally decided to show your face, huh?

Goldie smiles. His claws grow five more inches. Hel gasps.

HEL
That’s not fair.

Goldie rushes Hel, his hands sweeping out for her. Hel does a tuck and roll, ending up behind Goldie. She flips out of the crouch, slamming her foot into his back.

Goldie turns and snarls. He lashes out with his foot, catching Hel in the thigh, slicing it open. Hel screams.

Goldie brings its claws down. Hel reaches into her makeshift bandolier, and pulls out two claws. She uses them to block Goldie’s attacks.

Then it becomes a sword fight. Parry, parry, thrust, thrust. The two combatants push each other back and forth, never actually gaining ground.

Then, Goldie slices one of Hel’s claws to pieces. Hel gasps. She quickly reaches for another one, but Goldie’s faster.

He grips the bandolier in his hand and rips it off.

HEL
This isn’t good.

Goldie knocks Hel to the ground, smiling. He raises his claws in anticipation. But then Hel smiles. It seems that in all the excitement, Goldie’s something has re-appeared.

Hel thrusts her last remaining claw in that exact spot.

Goldie simply stays still for a moment, then shrieks in pain. Hel kicks the claw further in, and Goldie collapses.

Hel flips to her feet, and looks around at the horde of Detaks. She smiles.

All the Detaks retreat back to their underground passages. Hel sighs, falls to the ground. That’s when she notices Cleo, still sound asleep.

BLACKOUT
END OF ACT TWO

ACT THREE

INT. CABIN

Hel isn’t the only one not sleeping. Sarge paces the cabin. William is under the covers, fast asleep. Sarge looks at him for a moment, then leaves the cabin.

EXT. WOODS

Sarge walks down the path. We notice that her gauntlet is missing.

POV

The POV is coming from behind Sarge. It has a blue tint to it, and the edges are kind of fuzzy. A low growl emits from this “person.”

EXT. MAIN CABIN

Sarge emerges from the woods next to the main cabin. A light still burns inside. Sarge heads for it.

INT. MAIN CABIN/HALL

Sarge opens one of the oak doors to a large hall, decorated with stuffed animals and other woodsy stuff. At the back of the hall is the front desk. It’s currently vacant.

Stairs off to the side lead to the second floor. Doors open to other a few guest rooms, a dining room, game room, and kitchen.

Sarge makes her way to the front desk, and looks around. She sees the small bell and taps it.

No movement.

SARGE
Hello? Anybody here?

She rings the bell again. Still no response.

Sarge sighs, heads for the dining room.

INT. DINING ROOM

The room is cavernous. It’s made to serve three hundred people. The lights are off, and the only light source is from the crescent moon outside.

As Sarge turns to go, a scraping sound gives her pause.

She turns back to the dining room, glances about. She takes a step inside. Squints, trying hard to see into the darkness. But nothing appears. Nothing jumps out at her. Sarge shrugs and turns.

INT. HALL

A light is emanating from under a door behind the front desk. Sarge growls. With determination in her face, she marches past the desk and to the door. She kicks it open.

INT. ROOM

SARGE
Who do you think you are--

She stops in mid-sentence. Stares in horror at the sight before her.

The owner sits in his chair, four huge claw marks ripping his chest open. The intestines hangout. His head is knocked back at a very irregular angle. The skin protecting the neck has snapped, dangling in small, rubbery strands. The throat itself looks like someone was eating it.

SARGE
Oh my God.

She turns, her food rising.

INT. HALL

Sarge pushes past the desk, collapses to her knees. She begins to gag.

A large shape appears out of the game room, walking on two legs. We see that one leg is metallic, and not at all hairy. Also, one eye glows a dark crimson.

As the creature walks, the floorboards creak.

Sarge slowly turns around, fear on her face. She slowly stands up, her body going into shock. The creature approaches.

Sarge tries to run, tries to scream for help. But can’t. The creature descends upon her.

INT. DESERT

Hel and Cleo are on the move.

CLEO
Okay, so the Detaks showed up, you majorly kicked their asses, and I slept through the whole thing?

HEL
Pretty much.

CLEO
That sucks!

HEL
It wasn’t all that fun. The leader had this thing--

CLEO
Hey! Look!

She points to something in the distance.

CLEO
Is that the Temple of Holy Light?

HEL
Only one way to find out.

They continue walking, this time at a faster pace.

INT. CABIN - MORNING

CLOSE SHOT ON

Sarge, sleeping on the floor, groans and rolls over onto her side.

WILLIAM
(o.s)
Hey, wake up, sleepyhead.

Sarge sits up to see William, already dressed and ready to go.

SARGE
How long have I been sleeping?

WILLIAM
A while. I woke up two hours ago.

SARGE
(shocked)
And you didn’t wake me up?

WILLIAM
It was the crack of dawn, and you looked tired. I figured you went out patrolling or something.

SARGE
(a little confused)
I did. I did.

She looks around, then at her body, as if trying to find something.

WILLIAM
Well, how did it go?

SARGE
How did what go?

WILLIAM
The patrol.

SARGE
Oh! It was fine. Nothing happened.

There’s a knock on the door. William opens it. Sheriff Davis stands there, looking a little ragged.

WILLIAM
What’s the matter?

DAVIS
There’s been another murder.

Off their shocked expressions, we--

CUT TO:

EXT. MAIN CABIN

A crowd has gathered outside.

INT. HALL

The body of the owner is being rolled out through the back. Sarge, Davis, and William watch it go.

DAVIS
This murder wasn’t as bad as the last. There were no appendages tore off. The intestines were hanging out, but that’s it. It looked like the neck had been eaten.

SARGE
Eaten?

DAVIS
Sadly, yes. Way I see it, the murderer was in the middle of setting up the body like the last, but something happened and it couldn’t finish. Maybe somebody stumbled on them. I hope not. It means another body is out there somewhere.

WILLIAM
What else could it be? I mean, why else would the killer have stopped?

Before Davis can answer, Principal Sheridan comes storming through the crowd, his face red and his mouth redder.

SHERIDAN
What the fuck is going on? I thought you and you’re shaft trash were supposed to be catching this killer!

DAVIS
We’re working on it. These things take time.

SHERIDAN
We don’t have time! Bayboro called up, wanting to cancel the game this Friday! I was able to talk them out of it, but if another person dies.

WILLIAM
Is that all you care about? Some stupid game?

SHERIDAN
That “stupid game” is what helps pay for most of the school equipment. Both towns empty out on the night of the game. Between ticket prices and snacks, we earn enough money to get the school, through another year. We depend on this game.

DAVIS
Sheridan, I’m doing the best that I can. We will catch this person.

SHERIDAN
You better. You better.

He storms out. In the midst of the crowd is Lana, wearing red leather pants, a black long coat, and blue sweater. Dark shades hide her eyes. She smiles.

EXT. TEMPLE OF HOLY LIGHT

It’s a simple building. Only a story tall, it’s made of wood. The windows are crystal blue, and somehow peaceful. Grass and trees surround it, even though it’s in the middle of the desert.

HEL
I can’t believe it.

CLEO
It’s so beautiful.

HEL
I’ve never felt... so at peace before.

She sighs a happy sigh.

CLEO
I feel like I could stay here forever.

HEL
I know.
(comes to reality)
But we can’t. People’s lives depend on us.

CLEO
(disappointed)
Oh, yeah. That.

INT. TEMPLE OF HOLY LIGHT

The two walk inside. Trees, plants, shrubs, and flowers all stand tall in this room. A man sits in the middle of the room, eyes closed, meditating. He’s in his thirties, with black hair. His skin is dark, as if he’s spent one too many hours under the sun. He is Lax.

LAX
Welcome, fellow Sisters.

HEL
Hello. I hate to--

LAX
Don’t be silly. Here at the Temple, no one can ever intrude.

Hel and Cleo exchange looks.

LAX
Don’t be afraid. I didn’t read your mind. I just guessed.

They both sigh. Lax stands up, walks over to them.

LAX
What brings you here? Do you wish to visit the Holy Nexus?

HEL
No. I’m sorry. We’re here trying to find information on a friend.

LAX
I’m sorry, but the identities of our guests are kept secret.

HEL
The person we’re looking for is dead.

LAX
You wish to contact him from beyond the grave?

HEL
No. Bad choice of words. See, he’s been murdered. And we were told he came here once.

Lax looks at them apologetically.

LAX
Many people pass through here. I do feel sorry for the loss, but what does the Temple have to do with his murder?

CLEO
See, he’s lived in an Artificial Surface Environment all his life except for when he came to visit the Holy Nexus. We believe that he either met someone here, or on his way here.

LAX
You can give me a name, but I do not believe I will know this person.

HEL
Nate Gond.

LAX
(thinking)
No, the name doesn’t ring a bell. Many people who come here don’t even tell us their names. They come, visit the Nexus, then leave.

CLEO
So we’ve come all this way only to leave empty handed?

LAX
No. You may not have found who you were looking for, but all journeys have a destination, and all destinations reveal what you need to know.

HEL
Thank you for your time and advice.

LAX
It was no trouble at all. Just promise to come back.

CLEO
We will.

The two turn and start to leave. Lax stops them.

LAX
You know, it’s times like these I wish people were as memorable as Mark Tej.

Hel turns to look at him.

HEL
Come again?

LAX
Mark Tej. He came here seeking retribution for past sins. There was a good man. But he did not stay with the Nexus for long. The evil temptations lured him away from us. Anyways, I ramble. Good bye.

HEL
(absentmindedly)
Good bye.

She leaves.

EXT. TEMPLE OF HOLY LIGHT

The two walk back towards the desert.

CLEO
Hel, what’s wrong?

HEL
I recognize the name Mark Tej. He used to work for Tooley, head of the Bureau of Health.

CLEO
(shivers)
Don’t remind me. I still remember my disastrous relationship with Drack.

HEL
But Mark was one of Tooley’s right hand men.

CLEO
You think he might have hooked up with Nate here?

HEL
No... I’m not sure why, but I think someone else met Nate here.

CLEO
I’m not following.

HEL
I have to talk to Maria. Let’s go.

They take off across the desert.

INT. SHERIDAN’S OFFICE - LATER

Sheridan is alone in his office, going over some papers. His secretary enters.

SECRETARY
Um, Mr. Sheridan?

He looks up.

SECRETARY
Everyone else has gone home. I’m gonna lock the doors. Just make sure they close on your way out.

SHERIDAN
Fine, fine.

The secretary leaves. Sheridan goes back to his papers. After a minute, he hears footsteps in the hallway. He’s irritated.

SHERIDAN
Did you forget something, Ms. Burke?

But the woman who steps into his office is not Ms. Burke, but Lana! She’s wearing the same outfit she wore that morning. When she talks, there’s an air confidence around her. She knows what she wants and she’s going to have it.

SHERIDAN
You’re not Ms. Burke.

LANA
Very perceptive of you.

SHERIDAN
Who are you?

LANA
A freak, like you.

SHERIDAN
I beg your pardon?

LANA
Oh, you’ll be begging. I promise you that.

Sheridan is getting a little uncomfortable.

SHERIDAN
Is this some kind of prank?

LANA
No. You see, you’re getting in the way of my plan. And I hate when that happens.

SHERIDAN
I recognize you from somewhere.

LANA
We bumped into each other in the hall the other day. I had just come from stealing Dan’s wallet. I have plans for him. His girlfriend, not so much.

SHERIDAN
If you don’t leave this instant, I’m calling the police.

He reaches for the phone, but Lana’s faster. She grabs the phone and yanks it, pulling the cord out of the wall.

SHERIDAN
Woah.

LANA
Woah is right.

She reaches into her coat and pulls out a sharp, curved knife. She licks it.

SHERIDAN
Okay, p-put th-that away.

LANA
Okay.

And she buries it in Sheridan’s chest. He screams and topples out of his chair. Lana moves around the desk and extracts the knife. She goes to work.

First, she chops of his left foot. Then she shoves it in his mouth. After that, she slowly begins to carve up his face, giving him a bigger smile and taking away those pesky eyeballs.

INT. MARIA’S OFFICE

Maria sits in her chair, looking over a report. Suddenly, her vid-phone beeps. She hits a switch. Hel’s face appears.

MARIA
Hel, what is it?

HEL
I’ve learned something really important. Cleo and I are an hour away. Be ready.

And she clicks off.

INT. AUTOPSY ROOM

Ory is finishing his autopsy on Mark. Or what little autopsy he could do. He removes his gloves and throws them in the trash.

ORY
I swear, I don’t get paid enough to do this job.

Without warning, a huge clawed, furry hand swings into view, chopping off Ory’s head. It rolls on the floor, coming to rest near a drain. The blood seeps through it.

INT. CABIN - NIGHT

Sarge and William are in the cabin. William sits on the bed, while Sarge paces back and forth. William removes his shoes.

WILLIAM
We got nothing accomplished today. Maybe tomorrow.

SARGE
(distracted)
Maybe.

WILLIAM
So, do you want the bed tonight?

Sarge turns to him, suddenly very focused.

SARGE
Actually, I have other plans for tonight.

WILLIAM
Really? Like what?

SARGE
Let me show you.

She suddenly grabs William by the throat and lifts him up. He begins to choke. Sarge throws him on the bed, and grabs his shirt in her hands. She tears it with her nails, leaving it in shreds.

WILLIAM
Sarge, what--

SARGE
Don’t talk.

She whips out a round, black object that fits into the palm of her hand. She taps it twice, and a red rope flies out and wraps around William’s wrist. She flings the object around the bed post, and, using small blades, imbeds itself.

Sarge pulls out another one of these devices, and uses it on William’s other hand. He’s now stretched between the two posts.

INT. MARIA’S OFFICE

Hel and Cleo, sweaty and gasping for air, stand, while Maria looms at them.

MARIA
You made it in record time.

HEL
(gasping)
Y-ye-yeah, I know.

MARIA
So, what did you find out?

Hel holds out a finger, waits.

HEL
There was a man named Mark Tej. He worked for Tooley.

MARIA
Yes, I know.

HEL
You know?

MARIA
Yes. He was going to testify in a case against Tooley. I believe I handed it over to Danielson, head of the Covert Op branches.

HEL
Can we talk to him?

MARIA
We can try.

INT. LOWER LEVELS OF GUARD HQ/DANIELSON’S OFFICE

A large, roomy office filled with filing cabinets. Danielson, a man with blond hair, a killer smile, and a great body, stands by one of the files.

DANIELSON
Yes, I did place Mark in the protection program. I handed the case to an agent of mine--Bob Gunth.

HEL
That makes sense. It must have been his body that we discovered. Gunth and Nate must have been friends. They probably met at the Holy Nexus. So when Gunth got handed the Tej case, he sent Tej to live with Nate. It’s the perfect spot.

CLEO
But who killed them?

MARIA
Maybe Tooley. Or someone still loyal to him. They probably tracked all his movements.

CLEO
But how did Tooley find out?

HEL
He didn’t have to. If someone was still loyal to him, they would try and free him from jail.

CLEO
But resorting to murder? And why all the ritualistic stuff?

HEL
I don’t know. I really don’t know. But we need to start investigating the Bureau of Health, starting with its new Director.

MARIA
That would be Chadwick.

HEL
Let’s go.

CLEO
What about Sarge and William?

HEL
We’ll catch up with them later.

INT. CABIN

Sarge paces the room, while William tries to escape his bonds unsuccessfully.

WILLIAM
Sarge, it’s been fun, but untie me.

SARGE
The fun’s just beginning. See, I have this strange new urge to... I don’t know how to explain it.

WILLIAM
I don’t think I want you to.

SARGE
Hmm. You’re probably right.

WILLIAM
You can just let me go. I won’t mention this to anyone.

SARGE
See, I can’t do that. I’d rather play with you.

WILLIAM
Is this some kind of sex thing?

SARGE
No. I mean play with your insides after I’ve taken them out.

Sarge leans forward, her eyes glowing a deep red. Her teeth have grown longer, into fangs. She leans towards William...

BLACK OUT!
END OF ACT THREE

ACT FOUR

INT. CABIN

Where we left off. Sarge climbs on the bed and wraps her legs around William’s thighs. Drool slips from her mouth and lands on William’s chest.

WILLIAM
Sarge, please...

SARGE
Begging won’t do any good.

She caresses his chest, rubbing his firm muscles.

SARGE
Hmmm, you’re strong. Lots of muscle. Plenty for me to seek my teeth into.

WILLIAM
Sarge, this isn’t you. You can’t just turn into some kind of freakish animal overnight.

SARGE
And yet I did.

She reaches down to his pants, slips a finger into them. Then her hand. She grabs William’s dick, squeezes hard. Real hard.

William screams in pain.

INT. BUREAU OF HEALTH/CHADWICK’S WAITING ROOM

Hel, Cleo, and Maria sit on a couch, waiting patiently. Not.

CLEO
I hope this guy hurries up. I’m tired of waiting.

HEL
You and me both.

SECRETARY
You can go in now.

The team gets up and heads for his office.

INT. CHADWICK’S OFFICE

The team enter and sit down. Chadwick is a fat man with balding hair and a sour face.

CHADWICK
What do you need?

HEL
Information. We have reason to believe that one or more of your employees is involved in the murders of three people.

CHADWICK
Why do you believe that?

CLEO
Because one of them was going to testify against Tooley.

CHADWICK
Ah, ex-Director Tooley. The stupid fool.

MARIA
Do you have anybody you would think of as suspects?

CHADWICK
Of course not! You just now told me. I have no way of knowing.

MARIA
Mr. Chadwick, if you would just cooperate with us...

CHADWICK
The Bureau has suffered enough bad publicity because of Tooley. I don’t need any more to deal with. Until you have solid evidence, don’t come back.

INT. CABIN

Sarge removes her hand and smiles.

SARGE
How about we get rid of these pants?

She unbuttons them, then slowly begins to unzip them. William struggles, flailing his legs, but Sarge is stronger than he is.

She grabs the pants and pulls them down past William’s thighs. She gets off the bed and yanks them down to his ankles. Finally, she whips them off.

William, now nude save for his boxers, struggles fiercely against his bonds. Sarge laughs.

SARGE
Never figured you for a boxer boy. Oh well. Life is full of surprises.

INT. CHADWICK’S OFFICE

He’s speaking on a phone.

CHADWICK
I read over the reports they gave me. The attacks are identical to the ones that happened that first week. I thought the problem was dealt with.
(pause)
Well, I want it dealt with. If anyone ever finds out, we’re doomed.

He hangs the phone up and sits down. He starts going over some papers, but anger boils up inside of him and he rips them to shreds.

INT. CABIN

Sarge sits on the bed, looking at William hungrily. She licks her lips.

SARGE
It’s kinda sad. I have the biggest urge to eat you, but at the same time I want to mate with you.

WILLIAM
Um, is there another choice?

SARGE
No.

INT. DAN’S BEDROOM

He and Jeri are making out on his bed. Her hand moves down to his crotch. Dan moans with pleasure.

JERI
You like that, huh?

She begins massaging it.

DAN
You’re too good for me, baby.

Jeri pulls away from him. Dan is taken aback.

DAN
What is it?

Jeri looks at him, pain on her face.

JERI
I like you Dan, I really do. But I need more.

DAN
More? What are you talking about?

JERI
I mean, you’re sweet, and handsome, and a great football player, but I just need more. You’re to quiet, too reserved.

DAN
I thought you liked that.

JERI
I did, but now I need someone who isn’t afraid of taking risks.

DAN
And I’m not that person?

JERI
Sorry.

She gives him a quick kiss on the lips, then leaves the room. After a minute, we hear her car pulling out of the driveway.

Dan groans and flops back on his bed. He closes his eyes.

The room goes dark, with only a single red light in the center. Lana appears, and kneels down next to him. She smells his hair.

LANA
You are perfect, Dan. That Jeri is a fool.

She smiles.

LANA
But her mistake is our fortune. We need you, and the time will come soon.

She stands and walks into the shadows.

INT. CABIN

Sarge is nowhere to be seen. William has blood oozing down his wrists where he’s struggled to break free.

There’s a knock at the door and Davis enters. He sees William and rushes to his side.

DAVIS
What happened? Where’s Sarge?

WILLIAM
She’s the one that did this. She’s totally freaked.

Davis manages to undo one rope, and goes to work on the second.

Sarge appears in the doorway, yet she’s bigger. Her hair seems longer, and her nails are different.

SARGE
(husky voice)
Aren’t you the naughty one?

Davis reaches into his holster and withdraws his gun. He points it at her.

DAVIS
Don’t move, Sarge,

SARGE
You think I’m afraid of that gun? Hah!

She leaps forward, and Davis fires. Sarge yelps in pain, and collapses to the floor.

DAVIS
Oh my...

William has finished freeing himself, and walks over to Davis, who’s still clutching the gun.

WILLIAM
Is she... dead?

DAVIS
I’m not sure.

He moves closer to her, gently nudges her with his foot. She doesn’t respond.

Davis keeps his gun pointed straight at her. He’s not taking any chances. William starts to pick up his clothes.

Neither of them notice the bestial that rises up behind them. Covered in black fur, it looks like a wolf. Except for the glowing eye, metallic arm and chest plate.

It lets out a loud roar!

William and Davis slowly turn. Davis raises the gun, prepared to shoot.

Sarge jumps up behind him and, using her foot, knocks the gun out of his hand. She then knocks him out. William reaches for his blaster, but the bestial backhands him, sending William flying through the air and smashing into the wall.

SARGE
Careful. We need them alive.

The bestial lets out a growl, displeased.

It begins to change, the fur disappearing. It grows from a good 6 feet to 5’2, at least. The muscles reduce, the armor plating shrinks to nothing. Finally, standing where the bestial stood, is Tom.

TOM
(smiles)
Man, what a rush.

SARGE
Just help me with these two.

TOM
Whatever you say.

Sarge picks up the limp sheriff while Tom grabs William. He seems to just notice that William is stripped to his boxers.

TOM
Getting a little kinky?

SARGE
Just walk.

The two exit the cabin.

EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD

Coach Stanton stands in the middle of the field, smiling. The field is in a deep bowl, with large stands on either side.

Stanton takes in a whiff of air and closes his eyes. This is his element.

EXT. HILL

Cleo and Hel enter the ASE, and look around.

HEL
It’s strange that nobody’s around.

CLEO
It is Friday night. The big game.

HEL
A perfect place for a massacre. Let’s go.

INT. LOCKER ROOM

Dan is suited out, ready to play. Tom is nowhere to be seen. Stanton is at the front, giving a big lecture.

STANTON
It’s the big game, boys. The most important one yet. If we beat Bayboro, we make it to playoffs. Just keep that goal in mind.

Dan doesn’t have that on his mind. He glances behind him, and sees Raina, wearing a seductive red dress, her hair done in spikes, black gloves on her slender hands, staring at him.

INT. UTILITY ROOM UNDER FIELD

William and Davis are tied up in here. Large shapes move about.

INT. CHADWICK’S OFFICE

He is packing up his briefcase, preparing to leave.

INT. HALLWAY

He walks down the hallway, whistling to himself. His cell phone rings. He reaches into his coat pocket and whips it out.

CHADWICK
Hello?

MALE VOICE
Are you alone?

CHADWICK
Who is this?

MALE VOICE
One of your failed experiments.

This stops Chadwick in his steps.

CHADWICK
It was Tooley. He was responsible for it.

MALE VOICE
Tooley will get what’s coming to him. But you will too. You knew about us, and yet you just shut us away to die. Guess what? We’ve come back.

CHADWICK
Just leave me out of this. I’ll give you the vaccine.

MALE VOICE
Too late.

Click. The phone goes dead. Chadwick whimpers in fear. The lights go off. Chadwick screams in fear.

We hear a pounding sound. Chadwick glances behind him to see a large bestial running straight at him.

Chadwick screams and runs, but the bestial is on him. With a swipe of its claw, one of Chadwick’s legs go flying off. Chadwick screams and falls.

The bestial swallows the leg whole. The big lump travels down its throat and lands with a big thump in the pit of its stomach.

Chadwick is trying to crawl along the ground, but the bestial will have none of it. It punctures Chadwick’s back with its tremendous claws, and blood oozes out.

The bestial climbs on top of him, and licks the blood. Chadwick has given up on screaming, and just lets out soft whimpers.

The bestial removes its claws, then lops off Chadwick’s left arm. Blood gushes out, splattering the floor and the wall.

The bestial begins licking this up, then eats the arm. He grabs Chadwick and slams him against a wall.

The bestial reaches inside his left shoulder, its claws digging in. It begins to remove something sharp. Black blood trickles out.

The bestial has withdrawn a long, sharp nail, and slowly begins to push it into Chadwick’s right arm.

Chadwick begins grunting, but no other sound escapes. The bestial shoves the nail in all the way, and we hear it connect with the wall behind it.

The bestial reaches back into its shoulder and withdraws another sharp nail. It looks at Chadwick and gives him a smile.

EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD

The stands on both sides are packed to capacity. And people are still streaming in.

INT. LOCKER ROOM

The players begin exiting, shouting and very excited. Dan stays back, hidden in the shadows. He turns to Lana, who smiles.

DAN
Who are you?

LANA
I’m am your destiny. I am the one who was created for you.

DAN
I don’t understand.

LANA
You don’t have to. I know you feel an attraction for me, do you not?

DAN
I do. It’s almost...animal.

LANA
That’s because it is. We were created to be the perfect species. Our offspring would be invincible.

DAN
What are you talking about?

LANA
Seventeen years ago, the Bureau of Health decided to play God. They created you and me. The perfect specimens. We were designed for combat, but the project got canned when the Council heard about it.

DAN
The Council?

LANA
A group of powerful men. Or, used to be. You see, Nate was on that Council.

DAN
Nate?

LANA
Yes. To this town, he was just a quiet, humble man. But he used to be a great big part of the Council. Sheridan was also on that Council. So was Tooley and Chadwick.

DAN
So you’ve been killing them off?

LANA
Yes. They tried to kill us. But a kind woman saved us and sent us to different people. You grew up here, in a nice safe home. I grew up as shaft trash. I learned about my origins, and why I was created. And I knew I had to find you. But I needed help.

Lana pauses, places her hand on Dan’s chest.

LANA
So I went to Tooley. Told him that if he didn’t help me, I had ways of making him pay. He helped me find you. But I soon learned that we weren’t the only ones Tooley had experimented with. There were other ones like us. Bestials. That was Tooley’s nickname for us. It fits. So I found them, and told them about our destiny. Your friend Tom is one of them. But after Tooley was sent to jail, Chadwick learned about our continuing presence, and so he tried to have us all killed.

DAN
This sounds like the plot of some comic book!

LANA
But it isn’t. It happened. In the history of the underground, powerful men have always conducted some strange experiments. But we finally have the chance to reclaim what is ours. Tonight, there are hundreds of people at the game. Some will be food. Others will be changed to be like us. And we will rule, Dan. We will rule.

DAN
I don’t know.

LANA
Dan, you were made for a greater purpose. It’s our destiny to mate and create an offspring that will one day be greater than us. We shall rule it all.

DAN
It’s all a little grandiose, isn’t it?

LANA
The best plans always are. Now, are you with me or not?

EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD

The game has begun. Harbor Cove has the ball, and is making a play to get it up the field. Bayboro stops them.

INT. UTILITY ROOM

The large shapes begin to move out, passing by a terrified William.

EXT. STANDS

Cleo and Hel stand on the stairs, looking about.

HEL
I have no idea where they could be.

CLEO
I’m not sure.

INT. LOCKER ROOM

Lana moves closer to Dan, her body changing. Her legs become bigger, hairier. She touches Dan, who gasps. He begins to change as well. But they don’t resemble regular bestials. They’re bigger, fiercer looking.

INT. UTILITY ROOM

The bestials are gone. William begins to work his bonds.

INT. LOCKER ROOM

Lana, now fully changed, scrapes her claws on Dan’s back. He screams, but it comes out as a loud, bestial scream.

EXT. STANDS

Everyone looks around as the scream echoes around them.

CLEO
I guess we found them.

BAM!

The double doors leading to the offices, janitors closet, and guest locker room, burst open, and twelve bestials come running out.

The fans scream and begin to run. The bestials converge on them.

Hel raises her gauntlet and fires. She hits a bestial, but he keeps eating.

One bestial jumps on a cheerleader, and bites her head off.

Two bestials gang up on the band, ripping and tearing. One bestial swallows a tuba.

The two football teams run in horror as three bestials rush onto the field. One grabs a player by his football pants and tears. The pants come flying off, leaving the player nude. The bestial throws him on his back and rips into his dick.

Coach Stanton watches the massacre, numb. He simply stands there as his players are killed right in front of his eyes.

INT. UTILITY ROOM

William has worked himself free of his bonds. He slaps Davis, waking him up.

DAVIS
Wha--?

WILLIAM
We’ve gotta get out of here.

EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD

Most of the players are dead. One has been pinned down to the ground by, spread-eagled. The bestial in front of him smiles. It grabs the player’s legs and pulls. The player’s legs are ripped off of him. The player screams.

EXT. STANDS

A bestial charges Hel and Cleo. They raise their gauntlets and fire. Blast after blast tears into the bestial, yet it keeps coming. It leaps at them.

They jump to the side, dodging the bestial. It lands with a thump and whirls around, only to have Hel’s gauntlet pointed directly at its face. It whimpers.

BOOM!

Hel fires, blowing away the bestial’s face. She smiles.

DAVIS
Hel!

Hel and Cleo turn to see Davis and William, both armed with a blaster.

HEL
Save the people!

She and Cleo race towards the locker room.

INT. LOCKER ROOM

Lana and Dan, both very large, are in the middle of sex when Hel and Cleo break in. They turn and glare at the intruders.

Lana begins to transform back into a human.

LANA
Hello, Hel. Cleo.

HEL
Who are you?

LANA
An admirer. I was so very glad when you arrested Tooley. He deserved it. When I heard that you were on the case, I was happy.

CLEO
Why are you doing all this?

LANA
Many reasons. I’m so happy you two are back. You can now be turned, like your friend.

HEL
Sarge? What have you done to her?

SARGE
(o.s.)
Nothing.

She steps out of the shadows, smiling.

LANA
I only turned her into a bestial. Soon, you will be turned too.

Dan has reverted back to human. Sweat rolls down his forehead.

DAN
What a rush.

HEL
Sarge, don’t do this.

SARGE
Don’t do what? Hel, once you experience this, nothing will ever be the same.

HEL
Do you not hear the massacre going on outside? It’s chaos.

Dan moves to the door, looks at the field.

EXT. FIELD

A bestial has one of the Harbor Cove players pinned to a wall. It smiles. The bestial’s face begins to change, and soon, Tom’s head is on the body of a bestial.

TOM
Hey.

PLAYER
Tom? What are you?

TOM
Something you will never be. I’m gonna enjoy this.

WILLIAM
Hey.

Tom turns, and William fires point blank into Tom’s stomach. It blows out, guts splattering the player. Tom collapses to the floor, dead.

INT. LOCKER ROOM

Dan is gaping in horror.

DAN
This isn’t right. This is what I wanted.

LANA
Too bad. This is what you get.

DAN
No. I won’t be a part of this anymore. Even if we were made for each other.

LANA
Fine. I’ll find someone else.

And she shoves her hand into his chest, and pulls it out. Dan’s heart is in Lana’s hand. Dan’s corpse drops the floor.

CLEO
Oh my God.

LANA
Oh no. Not him. Me.

She backhands Cleo, who goes flying across the room.

HEL
Cleo!

She rushes to her side. Lana flips over to them, and kicks Hel in the face. She then begins to change.

LANA
You can’t defeat me.

A large nail is thrust into Lana’s chest, followed by three more. Lana turns, stares at a bestial Sarge in surprise.

LANA
Why?

And she collapses to the floor.

Sarge rushes out the door, headed for the field.

HEL
Come on!

EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD

Sarge runs to the nearest bestial, and twists its neck, killing the bestial. Hel and Cleo gang up on a bestial, shooting its legs off. They then concentrate on its head.

Davis fires his blaster, taking a bestial’s leg off. It yelps and collapses. Davis walks over to it and blows its arm off. He smiles and leaves it there.

Sarge is grappling with a bestial. She swings her arm, but the bestial blocks it. It lashes out with its foot, but Sarge leaps into the air, bringing her claws down into the bestial’s head.

The five warriors meet up in the middle of the field. Only three bestials are left.

HEL
We can do this.

The bestials charge. The group splits up. Cleo runs to one of the benches and jumps on it. She does a back flip, landing behind the bestial. She fires, catching its hair on fire. The bestial screams, swipes it paw at her.

Cleo somersaults out of there. Hel appears and kicks the bestial in its mouth. It turns its attention to her, but Hel’s on move. She flips in the air, firing her gauntlet. She catches the bestial in its metallic leg, blowing it sky high.

William and Davis are backed into a wall, the bestial growling at them. They open fire. The bestial goes up in a ball of flames.

Sarge is fighting with the last bestial. The two are trading savage blows, and are biting the crap out of each other. But in the end, Sarge wins.

DAVIS
It’s over with.

HEL
Yeah.

Sarge changes back into her human form. She looks at everybody, not sure what to say or do. But she doesn’t have to. Lana appears at the top of the hill.

LANA
Fools!

She flips off the hill and lands perfectly a few feet away from the group.

LANA
You can’t kill me that easily! I am the perfect bestial.

SARGE
It’s over with, Lana. All your bestials are dead, and you killed Dan, the only other bestial you could mate with.

LANA
(laughs)
I had you all fooled. I can mate with any bestial. The truth is, Dan wasn’t created to mate with me. He was created to kill me. When my creators found out that I was killing people at a very young age, they used my DNA, mixed in with a few odds and ends, and created Dan. But the Council decided to kill him along with the rest of us. See, I was mating with Dan so that I could introduce a virus into his system after he impregnated me. But you ruined that. Oh well. I always have other bestials.

CLEO
Excuse me? Look around. They’re all dead.

LANA
Maybe some of them are. But during the massacre, they also created them.

As if on cue, people spread all over start to rise up, and begin to change.

HEL
Guys, take care of the rejects. I’ll take Lana.

They all spread out. Hel approaches Lana.

HEL
You ready for this?

LANA
Of course.

And the two go into a spectacular fight. Their moves are dazzling. Lana throws a punch, Hel blocks it and slams her fist into Lana’s gut.

Lana slams her foot into the back of Hel’s head, then brings her knee up into Hel’s face.

Hel spins, jumps on her back, and thrusts both legs upward into Lana’s abdomen, sending her flying through the air.

Just as Lana is about to hit the ground, she twists and lands in a flawless move. She smiles, and with inhuman speed, rushes Hel and slams her head into Hel’s Hel falls to the ground.

Lana goes in for the kill, but Hel sweeps Lana’s feet out from under her, and she lands on her butt. Hel uses her right foot to smash Lana’s face while she slams the other one into Lana’s chest, breaking a few ribs.

Hel jumps up, but Lana jumps up faster and smashes her fist into Hel’s face. Followed by another, and another. She’s relentless.

Hel finally gets her opening. As Lana’s fist flies toward her face, Hel goes into a crouch, grabs a helmet, propels herself up, and slams the helmet into the side of Lana’s face.

Now it’s Hel’s turn for some bashing. Using the helmet, she repeatedly brings the helmet in contact with Lana’s face.

But Lana has regained her speed, and with a move too fast for the human eye to catch, grabs the helmet in one hand and crumbles it.

She grabs Hel by the throat and lifts her off the ground. She sends Hel flying through the air into the bleachers.

Hel doesn’t move. She’s been knocked out. Lana starts to move towards her, but a blur whizzes by her and knocks Lana to the ground

Sarge stands there, panting. Lana smiles.

LANA
You think you can take me, little girl?

Sarge goes into a fighting stance.

Lana smiles and stands up.

She moves with speed, but so does Sarge. Lana tries to land a series of well executed blows, but Sarge blocks all of them.

Sarge flips extremely high, landing near the top of the bleachers. Lana is quick to follow.

As soon as Lana lands, Sarge kicks her in the chest. Lana doubles over. Sarge slams her elbow into Lana’s back.

Lana is quick to recover, and a well placed fist breaks a few of Sarge’s teeth, as well as slamming her back into the railing.

Lana delivers a roundhouse kick to Sarge’s chest. Sarge howls in fury and tackles Lana to the ground, beating the crap out of her.

Lana grabs Sarge’s hand, and twists it back. Bones crack, and Sarge screams. Sarge stands up, holding her hurt wrist.

Lana laughs and walks towards Sarge, beginning to transform.

Sarge also begins to transform, but her bestial form is smaller than Lana’s.

LANA
You will die now. All your pathetic resistance has been for nothing.

HEL
Think again!

Lana turns, only to find Hel standing near her, a blaster in her head.

LANA
Please. That won’t kill me.

HEL
Maybe not, but it’ll hurt like hell.

And she fires. The blast tears into Lana, sending her flying back into the wall, shrieking.

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - DAY LATER

Sarge sits on a table, receiving an inoculation from a doctor.

HEL
It’s good to have to have you back, Sarge.

SARGE
It’s good to be back.

CLEO
How did you manage to keep your own free will?

SARGE
I just did. I mean, there were animal instincts, but nothing major. I had some kind of urge to do wrong, to just rip and tear, but I was able to control them. I guess the others weren’t.

HEL
Well, that’s over with. These injections will make sure that the bestial virus will haunt you no more.

SARGE
I just wanna get home.

CLEO
Don’t we all. So, what will happen to Harbor Cove?

HEL
They lost a lot of good people. The town will never be the same again.

SARGE
What about Lana?

INT. HIGH SECURITY CELL

Lana sits in the middle of the room, about 20 steel cables attached to her body. Wires run all over her, pumping fluids to keep her docile.

HEL
(voice-over)
She’ll be locked away for a long time, hopefully.
