Summit Morning at 12,090 ft.

When I awoke to snap this shot of Whitney, doubts clouded my mind. I was tired, sore and cold when I streched out of the tent around 6:00 a.m. The summit loomed 2,500 feet and 5 miles away along a path that promised to be even more treacherous and unforgiving than the one we had come up the day before.

The view below was taken as the sun began to set on us the day before. Light plays colorful tricks on these gray-granite rocks. In late afternoon or early moring, the mountains take on differernt hues depending on light conditions(compare the two pictures). Known as "alpine glow" it is a phenominal spectacle to behold.
