EQUIPMENT DRUGS AND MEDICATION

Equipment:

Below is a brief overview of the most common equipment used in sickbay aboard
the Minneapolis as well as information on many of the medications at our disposal.

The Hypospray is a simple and effective method of delivering substances intravenously
to a patient. The device consists of a spray head which can deliver drugs painlessly
through the skin, and even through clothing. Attached to this is a swappable vial which
contains the drugs to be delivered.
The Hypospray has several major advantages over the syringe; since the skin is not broken
by the spray, there is no contamination of the hyposprays tip during an injection.
The device can therefore be used repeatedly without any need for sterilization of the tip.
The hypospray is also completely painless, which has helped to make the widespread fear
of injections a thing of the past.

The hospital bed is, of course, one of the most important items to be found in any medical
facility, as it is here that the patient will spend most of their time.
Early beds were simply that - a place where the patient could rest in comfort. As technology
progressed the hospital bed began to be come more flexible and it was only a matter of time
before routine medical systems began to be incorporated as standard, leading to the early
versions of the device which has come to be known as the Biobed.

Today, the Starfleet biobed is designed to provide the medical staff with a wide range of
basic information on the patient. Inbuilt sensor systems allow the biobed to constantly
monitor factors such as heart rate, respiration, temperature, etc. These are displayed
on a permanent basis, usually on a panel located at the head of the biobed,
so as to present the information in the most clearly and easily accessible manner possible.
As a backup to the visual presentation, biobeds can be set to give audio information,
including normal functions such as heartbeat or automatic alarms shoul d any body function
fall outside a pre-set range.

The use of biobeds essentially means that every hospital bed today is equivalent to -
or in fact, superior to - the "intensive care" beds of centuries ago.
However, it is simply not resource efficient to include every type of medical device
on every biobed. While the goal posts have shifted, then, even the most modern
medical facilities still maintain a relatively few "high technology"
beds supplemented by a much larger number of standard biobeds.
The laser scalpel is one of the simplest instruments used in the modern medical facility.
This device uses a laser beam rather than a physical knife in order to cut the patient;
this allows a greater degree of control over the incision, and by eliminating physical
contact between instrument and patient reduces the risk of transmitting infections.
The Cortical Stimulator is a small device which is used to elevate the activity in the
cortex of a patient. The stimulator is typically a small device which is attached to the
cranium; it is used on patients who have reduced or damaged brain wave patterns.

The physiostimulator is a system designed to elevate metabolic functions in an impaired
individual. The unit is typically a small handheld device. In 2267 Doctor mcCoy used a
physiostimulator to bring Captain Kirk out of a deep coma which had been used to fool
the Romulans into believing that he was dead.

Handheld unit used to heal reasonably mild wounds to the skin. Autosutures can be used to
close incisions, heal knife wounds, etc. In 2369 an autosuture was used to heal a stab wound
received by Captain Jean Luc Picard.

A small device used to cause the patient to loose consciousness. The Neural Caliper is
often used as part of the preparation for surgery.

An advanced medical system designed to scan damaged organs on the quantum level
and replicate living replacements which can then be transplanted. The system was
created by Doctor Toby Russell, an expert in spinal injuries. The Federation refused
Dr. Russell permission to test the device on a patient on three separate occasions,
on the grounds that the risks were unacceptable. In 2368 she used the device on
ieutenant Worf, who had been paralysed after an accident on board the Enterprise-D.
The Gentronic replicator succeeded in creating a new spine, but Worf died on the
operating table. Fortunately, his Klingon physiology allowed him to be revived and
make a full recovery.
The dermal regenerator is used to repair damage to the skin of the patient,
including bruising and lacerations. The device is handheld; the doctor holds it
over the damaged area and moves it slowly back and forth. The treatment typically lasts
only a matter of a few seconds.

The defibrillator is a device used to restore sinus rhythm in a patients heart after it
has gone into cardiac arrhythmia. Modern defibrillators are portable handheld devices
which are placed into contact with the skin directly over the heart; when triggered
a computer controlled shock is delivered to the heart.

The subdermal scalpel is used for making incisions beneath the skin without breaking
the skin itself. It therefore allows purely internal surgery to be performed,
reducing the risk of infection and the need for instruments such as dermal regenerators.

Medications and Drugs

Medicines available will probably range from traditional chemicals to substances
that stimulate natural functions to tailored bacteria and viruses to nanotechnology.
The following is a small sampling of the kinds of medications that are available to the
Chief Medical Officer. Unless otherwise noted, medicines are generally effective for
about 24 hours per dose.

Anesthezine
This is an inhalant that can be used as a general anesthetic, but is more often used
by Security as an intruder control measure.

Benjisidrine
An anti-arrhythmic used to regulate some heart conditions.

Chloromydride
A cardio-stimulatory drug used where Inaprovaline is ineffective or may cause allergic
reactions. It is usually used in concert with cardial and neural stimulators
for additional benefits.

Cordrazine
A powerful stimulant that will usually revive a stunned or unconscious patient completely.
Cordrazine is "tricky stuff" - overdose can lead to delusional paranoia,
and the drug is addictive.

<<< TOP >>>

Corophizine
A general purpose antibiotic. It has minimal side effects and is non-addictive.
Crediline
This drug makes the user more likely to believe anything that they are told.
Its use has been superseded by more effective memory blockers.

Delactovine
A common stimulant with few side effects. It is mildly addictive.

Dexalin
This is used to treat oxygen deprivation.

Dylamadon
This is a powerful neuroinhibitor used for painless euthanasia.

Formazine
A common stimulant that can cause irritability with prolonged use (more than three days).
Otherwise, it has the same effects as Delactovine.

Genericillin
A powerful general purpose antibiotic.

Hypercoagulin
Stops bleeding very quickly. This is unnecessary when using Anabolic Protoplasers,
although a version of this drug for localized use on wounds in the field may exist.

<<< TOP >>>

Hyronalyn
This medication protects against radiation sickness. One dose halves the effective amount
of radiation received, and a second dose further halves that, and so on. Each dosage beyond
the first risks Hyronalyn poisoning, which could lead to permanent damage.

Inaprovaline
A cardio-stimulatory drug that can also be used to stabilize a weak but living patient's condition.

Kayolane
This drug causes immediate unconsciousness and the patient will remain asleep for 1-6 hours.

Leporazine
A general resuscitative.

Lexorin
A neurotransmitter inhibitor. This drug temporarily diminishes intelegence, but each dose also
makes psychic and psionic intrusions harder. Lexorin can also calm excited or agitated patients.
In greater dosages than 3 in 24 hours, the patient also begins to lose manual dexterity,
as the Central Nervous System begins to lose control of voluntary functions. Lexorin is mildly
addictive, and causes the patient to feel overconfident and happy.

Melorazine
This drug causes immediate unconsciousness. The patient will remain asleep for 3-8 hours.

<<< TOP >>>

Memory Blockers
These are used to permanently block specific memories in a patient. This is useful if a patient
has seen something unpleasant, or has been exposed to information that may violate the Prime Directive.

Memory-Beta
This drug stimulates the users memory. It allows the user to attempt to remember something
that has been forgotten.

Metrazine
Cardiac anti-arrhythmic. See Benjisidrine for guidelines.

Morathial
A general resuscitative.

Morphazine
Puts patients into deep, dreamless sleep for 3-18 hours.

Mylar II
With reconstructive surgery it is possible to conceal a person's true race.
However reconstructive surgery on an entire platoon or company is not always an
option time or facilities wise. The drug, Mylar II, causes the top layers of skin
and flesh to become more pliable. Thus with Mylar II injections a human could easily
appear to be a Romulan or Vulcan. There is a limit to what these injections can do.
A Mylar II Cardassian would take a few hours, be quite painful and require the use
of some prostectics. None of these disguises will fool a medical tricorder or a very
detailed inspection. These disguises may also require some form of makeup to be complete.
Exclusively for SFMC Recon.

<<< TOP >>>

Neurovine
This drug is an antidote for nerve poison.

Purge
This drug cleanses the user's systems of foreign biochemicals, and neutralizes active drugs
(including recreational drugs and alcohol) within minutes.

Rage
This drug gives the user double strength and and berserker rage for 10-60 minutes.
This drug is considered unethical by Federation standards.

Rexlin
This drug can be used as a tranquilizer, a pain killer and a sedative.
All is depending on the dose administered.

Shaker
This is an experimental neurotransmitter enhancer which increases the patients health,
strength and dextarity every 15 seconds, but decreases intellegence by a similar amount.
Users also temporarily gain the overconfidence and a high pain threshold. This drug
is considered unethical by the Federation.

Stokaline
A mild stimulant that will revive an unconscious or stunned patient. It has no major side
effects and is non-addictive. However, patients quickly develop a tolerance to it.
Each time Stokaline is not effective, all future uses on that patient will be less.
This effect is permanent and cumulative.

<<< TOP >>>

Suspend
Slows down all biological functions. This is similar to the Stasis Field. In sickbays,
a Stasis Field is used.

Tricordrazine
A refined version of Cordrazine that lacks the delusional paranoia side effects,
but will not revive as well. It is still addictive.

Tri-Ox Compound
This drug helps to provide oxygen to blood in thin atmospheres, or in cases of oxygen starvation.

Tryptophan-Lysine distillates

These are more powerful antibiotics. They add to the effective health of the patient,
but at the cost of a slightly Fatigued state that lasts until the treatments end.

Vertrazine
Combats vertigo. Only one dose will have effect in a 24 hour period. It has no side effects.
