She was adopted by Captain Andrew Summers, and his wife Alana when she was six months old. She has two adopted brothers, Daniel and Benjamin who are eight and three years older than her and an adopted sister, Celes who is five years older than her. Her adoptive mother is Bajoran, so she was brought up with Bajoran beliefs, although her parents also introduced her to a variety of Native American beliefs as well. Taya was a very mischievous child, although at times she could be shy. She loved to play tricks on her siblings, and would often team up with her brother Ben against the older two children. Originally, Taya wanted to become a doctor, but changed her mind when she was sixteen, and her father allowed her to fly a shuttlecraft. Ever since then, she has loved to fly, and took flight control, along with operations at the Academy.
After graduating, Taya remained at the Academy to complete an extra years
work, mainly focusing on survival training, which included command training
and emergency medical procedures. The extra year also means that she is
trained in basic engineering, navigation and is equally adapted to surviving
planet side or in space.
