Gourd Musical Gallery

Rain Bird Spirit Drum

This drum was made for my son and features a Hopi Rain Bird painted on the goatskin head. When beat with a soft beater, a deep resonant sound is produced. The drum is approximately 14 inches in diameter. The head is held in place by over twenty feet of leather lacing connecting the head to a six inch diameter disk-shaped leather base.

Fire Crow Drum

My first drum features an original design of Crow with the spirit of fire reflected in the iridescent glow of his feathers.

Rattle of the Ancients

A symbol from the ancient Mound Builders of the Southeastern United States is wood burned on a five inch diameter cannonball gourd. The handle is carved to a sharp tapered point at one end and fitted onto the gourd through holes at the bottom and top. The handle is secured with a small removable piece of wood at the top allowing the gourd to be "tuned' when needed.
