Getting Started

The first thing to do in order to *get* to posting is to make-up a character! Basically a character in a PBeM roleplaying game is the same as creating a character in any other roleplaying game. However, we don't concern ourselves with dice, attributes and percentile-based skills and whatnot. To this end, PBeM roleplaying is more akin to writing than luck of the die gaming. In a PBeM game, a character writes out a scene with other PCs and NPCs, then allows another player to pick up where it was left off, OR, that player can continue with a completely different aspect of our story on a different part of the ship with entirely different crewmmates. PBeM is more like telling a block of a story.

Creating A Character

The first thing to do is build a character. Since no dice are involved, you're going to have to "play chance" and give your character strengths, weaknesses and such on your own. Try and maintain a good balance and avoid "munchkin" characters that smack of "Superhero Syndrome".
When creating your characters Bio, try and answer all of these questions.
  • Name
  • Species
  • Position Wanted [try and list the top three you're interested in.]
  • Gender [if any]
  • Stats: Height, Weight, Hair Color, Hair Style, Eye Color, Skin Color.
  • Distinguishing Marks: Including- racial characteristics [try to remember not everyone knows what a Xyrillian or a Grazerite are.] and personal characteristics.
  • Personality
  • Quirks: Odd and unique habits.
  • Ambitions
  • Strengths: Physical as well as mental.
  • Weaknesses: Its a good rule of thumb to say you have a weakness after one or two freebie strengths
  • Likes.
  • Dislikes
  • Hobbies
  • Early Life & Family Ties
  • Academy Career: Perhaps include your major and minor?
  • Any Previous Education.
  • Cadet Cruise: Where and what did you do?
  • Any Previous Tours of Duty: including where, for how long and any promotion you got.

Whew! Ok, so you have all that written up? The next thing to do is send it into us for approval. The easiest way to get ahold of us is by email, so here are a few:
    cosmikcastaway@yahoo.com
    gcockle80@yahoo.com
We try and check our email daily, so try and give us a couple days to check it out and make some suggestions, if necessary. We'll email ya back as soon as we can :)

    A Little Q & A About the Game
  • Question: Where do we play?
  • Answer: We play on a posting site hosted by Yahoogroups. Once you send in your bio and well.. know what you're doing, we'll send ya the addy :)

  • Question: What format do we post in?
  • Answer: Either script or narrative style is just fine, whichever you are more comfortable with. (Click each for examples)

  • Question: So what if I've never played before?
  • Answer: No problem. All players go through a set of training posts to see if they understand the rules, techno-babble and all that fun stuff. You can choose to go through NCO Academy, or Officer's School, which is more complex.

  • Question: Whats with the dual rating?
  • Answer: Well ok. From experience gained in other PBeMs, some people just like to have more leeway in their posts. The missions are generally supposed to be carried out in PG-13. The R-rating is for people who, more than anything, want to pursue a romance with other players. Its important to note that while scenes of nudity and sex are generally OK, something considered to be "pornographic" isn't! Romance can be a blast to write, but it has to be tasteful.
