Southern Cross is the eighth NOVA Class vessel to be contructed and the first to use the new Mark Two variations in design. In general, Starfleet felt that the NOVA-Class was a failure in its performance profile- it was too limited in its range and too inept at defending itself. However, a panel decided that the design could be salvaged if the ship could be refitted for broader mission profiles and become more capable offensively and defensively. Thus, the Nova Mark Two was born. Currently, two other previous NOVA-Class starships are undergoing retrofit- the Gabriel and the Grissom, and should be online by mid-2379.
