When off duty, alot of officers and crew will mix in the Mess Hall, which is located on deck three. It is easy to grab a bite to eat, get something to drink, socialize, play games or just stare out at the vista beyond. Often times, the crew will hold informal parties, diplomatic dinners and other events in the mess hall. It is often also the site of plays, theatre and performances put on by the crew. The Southern Cross has a dedicated chef and waiters/waiteresses- all civilians- that can replicate or cook anything that the crew may desire. If someone is looking for a quick meal, Chef usually has an informal buffet of various foods, or one could use the wall replicators.
All crewmembers are alotted personal quarters, varying with position, rank and commission. While Enlisted and NCO personnel share relatively modest dormitories attached to a common living room, four to a dorm, Officers generally have quarters to themselves. Family units are always housed together and are alotted the equivalent space of the number of people in the family. Family quarters are stacked rather than side by side as in other Federation starships, and usually extend into two decks. Quarters are free to be decorated and, to a some degree, redesigned and arranged, to fit the individuals taste. Furniture, a desk, bed and comm terminal desk, and a replicator and garment reprocessors are all provided for. All quarters, unless specifically requested, come with a sonic shower. Water showers and bathtubs can be installed upon request and need.
The Private Exercise rooms are generally modest rooms capable of housing a half dozen or so people. The walls are not unlike holoemitters, allowing for all sorts of settings and games to be recreated for play or relaxation. Large games such as Anbo-Jytsu, Hockey, Skiing, Basketball, etc, must be played on the much larger dedicated Holodecks.
Use of the exercise rooms is usually scheduled, but sometimes the crew will set up various tournaments and allow all takers to have their shot. Security and HAZARD are quite fond of holding self defense classes and practice here. No one has priority over exercise room use.
