  • CHARACTER TRAITS

  • Personality: Kivan is a very mild mannered and gentle individual most of the time. He is friendly and easy to get along with, but is usually withdrawn from crowds and prefers to be alone. He is very religious, but yet hides most of his beliefs and practices in the secrecy of his quarters. He also has a very mysterious past, which he refuses to reveal. People usually find him intimidating at first, but he has the potential to make friends with anyone. He is honest to a fault, and intelligent. He seems naïve at times, and is the type to always see the good in people. He is very protective over those he would call a friend and can be a fierce warrior when he so decides.

  • Abilities: Kivan is a one-way telepath. He can send voice messages and limited projection of images. His reception isn’t nearly as good, but he can sense strong or intense feelings as well as receive from other telepaths. He has an affinity with energy and has some sort of connection with it but to what purpose or end is unknown. He is adept and innovative with machinery and is an excellent combat strategist. And while he like doing it, due to his light weight he is an excellent jumper. He can go days without food, as he doesn’t need sustenance as carbon based life does, and neither does he need oxygen. He can survive in intense radiation, and even thrives in it as the energy patterns can be used as a source of food to him.

  • Talents: He is very musical. Due to his lack of mouth, woodwind and brass instruments evade his grasp but other instruments come quite easily. He enjoys the lyre and an instrument called the “jakai” as his favorites. He is an excellent runner, and is excellent at martial arts. He has a very logical mind, and can analyze situations efficiently. Academics come to him easily, similar to Vulcan level intelligence, and he is adept at mathematics and sciences.

  • Limitations: Kivan has no mouth. Because of this he cannot speak outside of his telepathic communication. Also physically he almost never has the weight advantage in hand-to-hand combat, even if he is stronger than his opponent. He cannot withstand low energy environments, usually sub-zero planets. He has difficulty grasping illogical concepts and senseless violence. He has emotions, but feels it isn’t logical to let them run check (especially the bad ones). He is accepting of other cultures but usually has difficulty understanding their ways, and has a hard time adjusting to different situations.

  • Likes: Kivan likes music, philosophy, theater and art as hobbies. He likes to meditate and to spend time practicing his beliefs. He also finds the energy produced by dilithium a rather tasteful treat. He likes Vulcans by nature, and enjoys being around them, and appreciates the wide world of Shakespeare, though much of the romance goes past him. Most species of honor gain his respect, as there is a strict honor code he lives by as well.

  • Dislikes: The Borg are number one in his hating list. He also despises the opera since the noise hurts his ears. He doesn’t like the cold for obvious reasons, and he tends not to fussy loud, annoying people. He isn’t particularly fond of hierarchal systems, and the thought of a dictatorship or a monarchy makes him ill.

  • Quirks: Most of his personality is fairly normal and even human like. But three major quirks of his stand out. First, he fears women. His race is all one gender, and a masculine one at that, so women tend to be something he doesn’t understand. He gets nervous and clumsy while around them, which leads into his second quirk. While he has most of the human range of emotions, the concept of love eludes him. Since species that reproduce asexually tend not to have to deal with love, he is very curious about it. Finally, he never dreams and this annoys him. He likes asking people about their dreams, often to the point of making them uncomfortable.

  • Personal History: Kivan can only recall the past 50 years of his life. He has lived longer, but a deep sleep during the journey from the Delta to the Alpha quadrant, as well as some residual effects of excess psionic energy, has erased the memory of his previous life. He was among the last to wake up from the journey, and is one of the youngest of his long-lived race. When the Ba’Jantai made contact with the Federation, he was among those who publicly supported joining. Once they did, he volunteered to be the Ba’Jantai contact with the Federation military, so he joined Starfleet Academy. Outside of social adjustments, he passed through the Academy with honors easily. He joined the USS Hood as a tactical officer, and two years later became the deputy chief of security at the rank of Lieutenant junior grade. After a year he was promoted to a full Lieutenant, but remained the ACOS for two more years. His most recent assignment has brought him joy, as he is the security chief of the USS Southern Cross, a ship that is stationed at the Argolis Reach, the section of space he calls home. He has great respect among his people and has a bit of political and military pull among the Ba’Jantai.

    RACIAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Physiology – “It’s life, but not as we know it” applies perfectly to the Ba’Jantai. While most organisms are organic and quite physical, the Ba’Jantai are more “energy” creatures with a silicon-based body to enclose this energy. They have the basic humanoid appendages, (i.e. body, torso, two arms, two legs) but they are proportioned differently. They stand between 6’6” to 7’ tall, but seldom weigh more than 110 lbs since most of their mass consists of photonic energy. They are physically a bit stronger than a human, and can move slightly faster, though the lack of a weight advantage counters this. They have no internal systems to speak of except for the silicate endoskeleton and skin. They have an affinity with energy and can use their energy to have limited control over other kinds. They also have telekinetic and telepathic abilities, and telepathy is the only way they can communicate. These mental powers, called psionics, can grow rather large and be used in many different ways. No High Ba’Jantai are known to have survived the trip to the Alpha Quadrant, so the mental powers of those living in the Argolis Reach are standard at best. They have a wide tolerance to environments. They can withstand all sorts of radiation as it tends to be a sort of food for them, and they can take heat in temperatures of up to 120 degrees centigrade without being hurt. They do not eat or drink, but consume energy from high powered crystals or other sources through their skin.

  • History – *The following is learned only from written records* The Ba’Jantai were once a power in the Delta Quadrant many centuries ago. They were masters of the mental arts, and tended to combine technology with their body and minds in order to magnify their powers. Then the Borg came. They assimilated their technology, which improved their own greatly, and destroyed the Ba’Jantai as they could not be assimilated into the collective like most living things. In a desperate attempt to preserve their race, several High Arkani and Ajanti combined their psionic powers to transport a small tribe to the Alpha quadrant, out of the Borgs’ range. Even with the speed of the mind, the journey took 70 years and the Ba’Jantai who had been transported had their memories wiped clean. *End records* It took two centuries for all of those who had traveled to awaken, but by that time a civilization had been rebuilt. Most of the technology and mental powers had been lost, but the Ba’Jantai established themselves and made contact with the Federation about two and a half centuries after their arrival. The Ba’Jantai were untrusting of the Federation at first, but after about a decade a membership application was granted and the Ba’Jantai homeworld and colonies is becoming a staging are for the Federation expanse into the Argolis Reach.

  • Culture – The Ba’Jantai culture is very complex and tends not to be understood by most of the other races. Politically the species is Democratic, but very socialistic, almost to the point of communistic. Everyone is treated equal, and the living conditions and wealth of the race is spread evenly throughout. Poverty does not exist, and there is a place for everyone in their society. They have mild personalities and tend to be quite friendly, however their military prowess and technology would make one think that they are an extremely aggressive rather than defensive race. There are three social “castes” within the society, but the divisions are more physical than social. The Arkani are the warrior caste, and are physically strongest of the three. They usually make up most of the labor force and military, and have mental powers that tend to be on the offensive side. The Ajanti are the scholar caste. They tend to be politicians, management, religious leaders, and diplomats. They do much of the management, but their mental powers tend to be of a non-violent nature. The Xianthi are the civilian and scientist caste. They usually work in research and development , medicine, and engineering fields. They’re the weakest of the three physically and have limited mental powers. However their incredibly high IQ’s and their affinity with energy and machinery make them an invaluable asset. When one looks at the three castes, it is hardly possible to tell that they are of the same species but one caste can be offspring of another, keeping the numbers in all three castes balanced. It is unknown what causes a young Ba’Jantai to caste into what it does, but it is suggested that the different mental energies of the surrounding Ba’Jantai have an effect. One caste typically does not associate with another as much, but all three have equal status and the governing Triumvirate contains one member of each caste. Their religion is mostly worship of nature, and the Homeworld in particular. The warriors have a strict honor code, which they tend not to reveal. Members of their race are considered “brethren in life and in death” and it is not unlikely for a Ba’Jantai to sacrifice himself for a fellow sentient being. They do some colonization, but tend to keep their focus on the Homeworld with a strong defensive military.
