My Review- 'Rogue Planet'

WARNING! THERE BE SPOILERS ON THAT 'ROGUE PLANET'

There once was a series called DS9. In Season 3 DS9 introduced the Founders. (Yes, I know u probably know this already, but be patient) The Founders lived on a systemless planet. The Founders could shapeshift, so completely in fact you could not tell them apart from what they became even with tricorders. 'Rogue Planet' introduces the Wraiths. A species of shapeshifters, who live on a systemless planet, and can shapeshift so completely u cannot tell them apart from what they became, even with scanners. Woh, Deja Vu. When I first heard about this I thought maybe there would be some reference to the Founders, despite them being tens of, if not hundreds of, thousands of light years away. At which point my continuity alarm went to red alert. All the people living on my street could hear was a really loud siren. Fortunately no such discontinuity happened, though it is a strange coincidence to say the least. Both are even telepathic, though the Founders telepathy is restricted to links only, except one DS9 ep where Odo managed to project his thoughts into the heads of Garak, Jadzia and Sisko. I cant remember the name of said ep right now, but I can remember enjoying it. Still Im going off at a tangent aren't I?

STORYLINE

Lately I've been attempting to sum up my thoughts on each episode with one word or phrase. "Excellent", "Fantastic", "Brilliant", "Sublime", were just some of the many I rejected after about 5 minutes. In fact the best word I can think of to describe 'Rogue Planet' is 'bad'. Just bad. The entire episode completely never rose above mediocre for me, and was usually much worse. Nowhere in the episode did I feel totally impressed, it's hard to put my finger exactly on why. I just didn't feel compelled, and if you dont feel compelled by an episode, you just dont enjoy. There are little niggling mistakes everywhere, stupid little things which should of been corrected. For example Malcolm's surprise that the Eska sensors use Infra-Red. Seeing as this is something we can easily do today he shouldn't of been surprised at all. In fact Im writing this at 8:46 am, part of me had trouble deciding whether or not to even bother to get out of bed to do this yet. (And yes, I do have College today, I just dont have any lessons til 13:15) I just cant be bothered to write much this morning, and waste my time on such a sub-standard ep, so please excuse me if this review is shorter than usual. OK this isnt anywhere near the level of say Voyager's 'Threshold' which holds the dubious record of being my least favourite Trek episode of all time. Or even indeed some TNG eps including 'The Royale', 'Sub Rosa' and 'Genesis'. Hey, as bad eps go it's not even on the level of DS9's 'Fascination' which had Lwaxana Troi to increase the inherent badness in the episode. Still it was awful, no denial there.

The episode has no real effect on the timeline of things, which is good for casual viewers. It doesnt particularly matter to me much, TNG's 'The Most Toys' was a brilliant episode that could be described like this. Just as long as it doesnt get to Voyager proportions when we get an ep like this almost weekly. Anyway, it makes it easier to forget it.

THE SHIP

Nowt to write here, and it doesnt feel worth it anyway.

THE CHARACTERS

Archer felt a little stiff this week. I dont think Bakula was acting very well. In fact most of the regular cast didn't come off that well. The Guest stars did, failing as they did to become generic thug like characters, but they should of got more screentime.

T'Pol provided two pieces of unintentional hilarity this week. First she said "Vulcans dont care about appearances" and then she said "If it had been a scantily clad man would you be so eager to meet them?" Convincing from the character in the skin tight catsuit who pushed her breasts into Archer's face a few weeks back.

STAR TREK NOTES.

Uck. That is all I have to say.

Rating (out of 10): Im internally debating whether this is better or worse than 'Unexpected' Id say it's on the same level. 3/10. Consider this temporary, maybe Im being a little mean, or maybe Im not and it'll get even worse with future viewing. We'll see how it goes.
