The Intrepid is one of the fastest vessels in Starfleet despite it's relatively small size. This is achieved by moving nacelles which move up and down for warp and impulse speeds which also stresses subspace less. The Intrepid is one of few Federation ships manoeuvrable enough to survive in the plasma fields of the badlands. It is reasonable therefore to assume that the Intrepid was built to fight the Maquis. One of these vessels (USS Voyager) was the first vessel in Starfleet to be equipped with bio-neural gel-packs. These use biological nerve endings similar to the way a human brain works to compute much faster than standard isolinear chip matrixes seen on other vessels. in battle the Intrepid is not very powerful. It has modest shielding and weaponry instead it relies on it's manoeuvrability to dodge the more powerful torpedoes and so only get hit by phasers or disruptors. The Intrepid is one of few ships in Starfleet capable of landing on the surface of a planet.
