Mayon Volcano is truly the landmark of the Bicol region. But what is remarkable and famous about it is its almost perfect cone shape. For all its beauty, Mayon has its own dark side - its history of geological wrath. During the last 150 years it has erupted no less than thirty-three times. Its first recorded eruption was in 1616. The worst was in 1814 which buried the whole town of Cagsawa, leaving only its church belfry as the sole grim reminder of the catastrophe.
