Little is known about VeKiviasa's history before Starfleet. She arrived on Earth from Thelka IV, and from there her origins are unknown. She applied (along with recommendation from several COs) to and was accepted to Starfleet Medical Academy in 2360, and graduated eight years later with high honors in the top five of her class. She was immediately assigned to the USS Al-Batani as assistant medical officer under Doctor Allen Kessel. Four years later (2372) she was promoted to lieutenant junior grade, and given the position of chief surgeon along with AMO. Three years later (2375), Commander Allen Kessel was killed while on an away mission. For five weeks, VeKiviasa acted as the CMO until the replacement CMO arrived. She worked with her new superior for about a week until the Al-Batani fell under an act terrorist sabotage. Lieutenant Commander Hayley Drecker, the CMO, and more than half the crew was killed. A year later (2376), VeKiviasa was assigned to the USS Norway as chief surgeon, after the trial and court martial of the Al-Batani Captain and several other crewmembers. VeKiviasa did not under go court martial, but was considered a key witness in the investigation. In 2377, she was transferred to the Potomac as CMO on the very eve of the ship's commission.

VeKiviasa is usually a very somber person, especially in some of the most chaotic situations. She likes to read, write articles, and conduct medical research, and little else, though at rare times she can be seen on the holodeck. Some have known her as Kivi.

AvaGem: Little is known of their origins. They are a scattered people with many colonies in the Alpha Quadrant and a multi-species alliance in the Beta Quadrant, nicknamed the Beta Counsel or Beta Alliance (by those from the Alpha Quadrant as they have not really named their association themselves.) The Beta Counsel is an extremely peaceful organization, and is similar to the Federation with the exception of governance policies.

The AvaGem are Human in appearance, but contain the same inner layout as the Jem'Hadar, and produce their own isogenic enzymes similar to ketracel-white, unlike the Jem'Hadar who have been genetically robbed of the ability. The AvaGem also have an ability to produce a florescence from a ring surrounding their iris, and from their hair, which the Jem'Hadar have also been genetically prevented from doing. The Jem'Hadar are artificial cousins to the AvaGem. The exact date is unknown, but it is known that the Jem'Hadar were created genetically by the Founders long before the Federation existed. The Founders used the AvaGem and another unknown species to create the Jem'Hadar. (The unknown species is what gives the Jem'Hadar their familiar scaly looking skin and other outer features.)
