Vastagor Ocalla CA & Vas'Hatham DD:

As part of the Great Reconstruction, many older Romulan ships were refited with updated technology to act as support craft while the Warbird class was being developed. Amongst them was the venerable Vas'Hatham, or Bird of Prey class destroyer. As well as a slight change in the hull configuration and weapon upgrades, the class was also outfitted with the newly aquired inline warp engine configuration obtained from the Klingons. This vastly increased her capabilities and survivability, since all previous versions of this vessel lacked any warp drive whatsoever and needed to be ferried to their mission sites.

The Vastagor Ocalla (Talon of Fire) class was outright redesigned and replaced as opposed to simply being refitted. The former CL was considered antiquated, even by the standards of the aging carrier-based Romulan Fleet. As well as being completely redesigned, her role was also upgraded to CA, as Romulan stratigic planners foresaw less of a need for the interm CLs.
