Coyote Class Background Information
-
The Coyote class scouts were an attempt to create a lightly armed high speed advance reconnaissance vessel with superior long range sensor capabilities. The U.S.S. Coyote (NCC-7309) was commissioned in November 2270.
Her need for a fast propulsion system led Starfleet R&D to Jmjtys’ Starship Production Division. In Starfleet’s only known dealing with them, Rolls-Royce supplied their FWK Mk-I engines for the Coyote design. In terms of velocity, these engines were perfectly suited for the projected design specifications that Starfleet had in mind. Although slightly oversized for a scout class ship, they could provide a sustained output of 3375 cochranes (warp 15). This made her a full 253.57% faster than Starfleet’s then fastest scout. The drawback to these seemingly miraculous engines were that to sustain such exorbitant speeds required an enormous energy expenditure on the part of the craft’s power systems. Fuel consumption would reach nearly 20 times the normal usage at warp 13, and well in excess of 50 times at warp 15. As well, the purchasing of the FWK units nearly tripled the cost of each ship built. As a result the Coyote project was abandoned in March 2273 following the commissioning of the ninth and final ship built in her class, the U.S.S. Fox (NCC-7317).
Also peculiar to the Coyote class was her use of the T’Svan Sensor Systems Mk-VII Warp Probe. Each ship caried two of these heavy probes, being 12 metres in length and weighing 400mt each. Their engine output could sustain 729 cochranes (warp 9) for 50 days, providing a range of 32 parsecs.
U.S.S. Coyote & Fox Mod Info:
- The Fox is based on an old plastic scratchbuilt model I made out of a bicycle reflector and scrap styrene back in '88. This is actually the fifth incarnation of her, having gone through two plastic models and three computer models over the years, including a major refit to the nacelles.
The new Pulse mode on the phasers was incorporated into Starfleet vessels from 2269 to 2289 (ST I, II, & III) due to the higher damage the pulsing effect caused. This effect would be further refined into a rapid pulsing nadion stream that visualy appears more like a continuous beam, and would be fitted onto ships built after 2290 (KA and ST VI eras).
When piloting the Coyote, remember that her hull, guns and shields arn't the best in the fleet, so rely on her speed, manuverablity and stealth (ECM) to stay out of harm's way while doing hit and run passes at your target.
Coyotes hunt better in packs too: Where one is weak, a wingman can be used to draw your opponents' fire while you do some strafing. Also, her sensors are super-powerful, as one of her mission requirements was to hunt cloaked ships. This aspect makes her quite adept in Nebula/Planetary Ring environs as well.
