The Edge of Nowhere
Why "The Edge of Nowhere?"

We run together but so much is left unsaid
I'm right beside you but I can't tell what's in your head
I made a promise but you keep me hangin' on
So far to travel but my heart it ain't that strong

Can I call you from the edge of nowhere?
Can I reach you if I call from the other side?
Would you throw me a line 'cross the banks of a broken river?
Would you save me if I threw myself into the raging tide?

There's so much I could say but I can't tell you why
We got to walk to the water when I know that we could fly
Away from here but the path is oh so long
Longer than the time that it takes to get back home

Can I call you from the edge of nowhere?
Can I reach you if I call from the other side?
Would you throw me a line 'cross the banks of a broken river?
Would you save me if I threw myself into the raging tide?

[repeat]

The song is called Edge of Nowhere by a fantastic Australian band called Hunters and Collectors. I just felt that the lines represented Chakotay and the relationship with his captain, senior officer and friend. I toyed with the idea of just creating the one piece from it but in the end realised that, to me anyway, it summed up the relationship, particularly when we did see how distant it got in the later seasons. It is this alienation I think that eventually led to a desperate man forming a desperate relationship with Seven of Nine, that led to a desperate Admiral Janeway coming back through time. This is the man who made the Angry Warrior legend famous and the woman who told him a year later that she couldn't imagine a day without him. But its also the same two people who told each other just a year or so after that they didn't know what had happened to the other person, why had they changed so much?

Amazingly enough it seems I caught a lot of the song's essence in my interpretation. The H&C unofficial website has comments by lead vocalist Mark Seymour. "That song is about appealing to someone, trying to bridge an impossible gap - the gap in possible communication that is between you and someone who isn't there." This could well be Chakotay appealing to Kathryn, who has been replaced by the captain. The person who created the site has this to say: "Lyrically I think "Edge Of Nowhere" is about a man in a relationship that is somewhat troubled by a combination of personal troubles and relationship problems. The stage in a relationship where it may repair or completely fall apart and it could go either way. A state where the person does not want to lose the relationship but does now know what is going on how to fix it. The questions posed in the chorus are aimed at the partner - can I call you from the edge of nowhere? Probably to some degree asking if she can help save him from himself."

Unfortunately, I cannot find a sound sample of this song and I'm useless at uploads. Besides which, my version is on audio cassette and not CD. However, for more information on the band you can look at the True Believers website. You can find the album to buy at CDNow.com
