SIMPLE GIFTS

Captain Janeway awoke at 0430 hours and ran to the bathroom. It was the third time that week that she had woken up feeling sick. She emerged 5min. later looking deathly pale.

     "Janeway to the Doctor"

     "Doctor here how can I help you Captain?"

     "Could you please come by my Quarters?"

     "Of course" he said with worry now present in his voice. It was unlike the captain to go to the doctor. Heck the only thing she ever managed to be late to was her physicals. Plus she did not sound to well.

5min. later.

BE-BOP

The door to the captain's quarters sounded.

     "Come in" Janeway meekly called from her sleeping quarters.

The doctor walked in and headed to where he knew the captain was. The site that met his eyes was Janeway sitting on the edge of her bed dressed in her nightgown still, and she was as peal as a ghost.

     "Captain what are your symptoms?" he asked beginning to scan her.

     "Headache, Fatigue, nausea"

     "Hum, how have your eating habits been like the past week to two weeks?"

     "Last week I could not stop eating but this week I can't hold any thing down."

     "Well congratulations Captain you are going to have a baby."

Janeway was now in complete shock how could she be pregnant. She had, had her boosters that month. Chakotay had his also.

     "Captain, hey are you ok"

Janeway just nodded.

     "Ok then I want you to come to sick bay tomorrow for some test ok"

She nodded once again.

     "All right," he pressed a hypo to her neck "that should help with the nausea and it will help you sleep some more also. Now I want you to get some more sleep. I will inform Tuvok that you will not be in today or tomorrow. Do you want me to inform Chakotay as to why you are not going to be."

Janeway shook her head no.

     "Ok I'll see you tomorrow."

He was about to leave when Janeway stopped him. "Doctor"

     "Yes"

     "I had my boosters, how can I be pregnant?"

     "Well some times they are not full effective there is all ways that chance and I guess you were one of the lucky ones," he told her.

     "Thank you, doctor."

He nodded and then left. By now Janeway was feeling the effects of the hypo and lay down to sleep. Just before she went to sleep it hit her she was going to have chakotays baby.

4 hours later

     Janeway woke up for the second time that day and went to the replicator. She did not feel sick thanks to the hypo the doctor had given her and was hungry. She ordered strawberry waffles and wiped cream. She thought about having some coffee but decided on milk just until she talked to the doctor. After she ate her breakfast she went to the main living area and sat in her favorite chair and started to read. Around 1200 hours she fell asleep in a rather wired position.

     On the bridge commander Chakotay was wondering why the doctor had put the captain on sick leave for two days, and just like the human mind he thought the worst. He decided that at break he would go and check on her. About a half an hour later Chakotay was walking down the hall to go to the captain's quarters. When he got to the door he rang the chime two times there was no answer. Getting worried he pushed in his override code and went in. he looked around and did not see her. He was about to walk in to her sleeping area when he noticed her curled up in her chair with a book across her chest, one leg over the arm of the chair, and one are hanging down the other side opposite the leg. Chakotay was thinking of waking her up but changed his mind instead he scooped her up in his arms and carried her to her bed. He laid her down he pulled all her blankets over her and kissed her fore head. He was heading out when he saw the book she was reading on the ground. He went over and picked it up he placed in on the coffee table and walked out, but not before he saw the title What to expect if you are expecting. He walked to the mess hall for lunch with a big smile on.

     A couple of hours Janeway awoke to Chakotay sitting next to her bed.

     "Chakotay," she said sleepily

     "Good afternoon sleepy head"

     "How did you get in here?" she asked sitting up in her bed.

     "I used my override"

     "O you," she through a pillow at him, "Did any one see you"

     "No"

     "Good"

     "So how are you"

     "Never been better"

     "Then why are you on sick leave"

     "Because"

     "Because why?"

     "Just because"

     "Kathryn are you pregnant?"

Janeway looked at him then begin to cry.

     "O it's ok," he said and pulled her to him, "what's the matter," he was now rocking her in his arms.

     "How did you find out," She said through gasps of air do to her crying.

     "I saw the book you were reading and guessed."

     "I wanted to tell you my self"

     "I'm sorry" Chakotay was now rubbing her back Janeway now had her head pressed to his shoulder. He crying slowed and then stopped. She was still wrapped in his arms.

     "Stupid hormones"

Chakotay laughed "it will get better, I promise. Hey are you hungry."

     "Yea"

     "Let's go to the mess hall for smoothing to eat I think it would be a good idea to show the crew that you are not dieing since that is the roomer that ha been going around."

     "Yea that would be a good idea. So I am dieing now. Who came up with that idea?"

     "Let's see Neelix heard that you were on sick leave, from some one and another person said that you were very ill. So now every one thinks that you are really sick"

     "They do? Well we will just have to straighten things out now wont we." She said putting on a casual dress since she was off duty and on leave.

     At about 1500 hours the command team entered the mess hall.

     "Captain what a wonderful surprise," Neelix said, "please come sit down." He proceeded to pull out her chair, when she sat he pushed it in for her. He then got her try for her as well.

     "Neelix"

     "Yes captain"

     "I am a grown women I do not need you to do everything for me. I am perfectly capable of doing it my self"

     "Captain please allow me you need to save your strength."

     "Neelix I am fine, the doctor just wants me to take it easy for a few days."

     "You mean you are not dieing."

     "No," she said flustered, "What gave you that idea?"

     "Let's see crewman Jacobs said you were I'll and then Patterson said that you were dieing, I am sorry be it me to lesion to roomers."

Chakotay who had been waiting and all most breaking own in a fit of laughter at the scene in front of him finely decided to give Janeway a brake from Neelix. "Neelix"

     "Yes commander"

     "Could we talk alone please," He was still trying not to laugh.

     "Of coarse, commander captain, and sorry for assuming that." With that he bustled his way to the kitchen.

     "Maybe I should make a ship wide announcement that I am no dieing." She whispered to him across the table.

     "Maybe"

After they ate there dinner they went off to the holo deck for an hour. At about 1800 hours the captain and the commander were out side her Quarters. "Good night Kathryn. I will see you tomorrow first thing in sickbay?"

     "No that would look suspicious."

     "You're right"

     "How about you come in about an hour after ok"

     "Ok"

     "Good night" she slowly leaned toward him and him to her they met half way in a long lingering kiss. She moved her arms around his neck and pulled him closer. He put his arms around her waste and cradled her to him. There need for oxygen finely broke them apart.

     "Good night Chakotay"

     "Good night Kathryn."
