Many americans take advantage of the fact that we are a free nation that was conceived in liberty. We are a nation where our government realizes, and institutes, human rights and civil liberties. Many countries do not recognize these rights and control the people with an iron fist. Socialism and communism still is major form of government for many countries, and because of this America is a nation of many cultures. Yet American still has a long way to go before equality is ever reached. Just as with every country, we do have our share of hate crimes and our own government insituted forms of prejudism. In the year of 2001 a total of 16.1% of hate crimes were directed towards homosexuals. That is a stunning 7000 people who died due to their sexual orientation ( http://www.newsaic.com/mwcrime.html)
How did we ever get to this point? What event lead to the assualt and discremination of homosexuals? To find our answers one must first go to where it all started, religion, mainly, the christian bible.
