S II DISCOVERY TEST

Above: The Demo Series II Disco with Burj Al Arab in the background

Prior to buying my Silver Disco II in March 2003, Nabila Al Dahmishy from Al Tayer Motors gave me a Series II Discovery yesterday to test whilst my Freelander was having some work done, which was jolly nice of her, and much appreciated on my part.

Well let me make the negative points first.

1. The steering rods and front diff look quite exposed for wadi bashing, although Nabila did mention that she has had no problem with her vehicle, and if I was concerned steering and diff protection could easily be added.

2. Position of interior front door handles, who on earth decided to hide them in that position, not very ergonomically designed that's for sure. Nabila agreed.

3. The vehicle lent to me was a 4L V8 Automatic. When moving from Neutral to Drive, there is a delay of about 2 seconds before power is transferred to the wheels. Some change of driving habits required as I am used to power being instantly transferred, even in my Freelander.

Now lets look at the good points.

When moving I found the driving position excellent in traffic, steering response was instant, and powerful acceleration when required in town and on the highway. Handling on corners was excellent thanks to the ACE, and comfort with a powerful Air Con was not too shabby. Loads of space too.

However I am not looking at the road handling side really, as what I need is a vehicle that is comfortable on the road and give me a lot of pleasure off road too.

The Disco did not disappoint me, although I did not get too adventurous, and took it to some tracks that I frequent with the Freelander to see how the handling compared, and it drove well, very well.

Well, final verdict, re-position these interior door handles and I will have no hesitation in buying one (in a nice light colour such as silver)

Once again, many thanks to Nabila and Al Tayer Motors of Dubai for their generosity in lending me this vehicle.
