A week after the future Admiral Janeway sacrificed herself in order to get Voyager home, Captain Janeway is promoted to the rank of Admiral. The celebration is short lived however after Starfleet sensors pick up a Borg invasion force on its way to Earth. But the bad news doesn't stop there; Sensors also reveal that the Borg are armed with future technology assimilated from the future Admiral.
With little hope of the Federation surviving the encounter, Janeway, decides the only thing to do is to travel back in time once more and stop the future Admiral from traveling back and disrupting the time line in the first place (even though doing so violates a direct order from Starfleet Command).
While working together to duplicate the device used by the future Admiral to travel through time, Janeway and Seven finally give in to their feelings and share their first kiss just before Janeway sets off on her mission: Not only stop her future self, but also to warn her past self about Seven's marriage to Chakotay and her death three years later. Seven stays behind to seal the temporal rift behind the Admiral in order to prevent the USS Titan from following her through.
Admiral Janeway successfully prevents her future counterpart from disrupting the time line by collapsing the rift, while Seven collapses the other in her time period. But the build up of energy from the two temporal rifts as they collapse causes a wave that damages the Admiral's shuttle and she suffers severe injuries.
Meanwhile, Captain Janeway finally manages to beam the injured Admiral to sickbay. The Admiral attempts to complete her mission by warning her counterpart about Seven, but only manages to utter Seven’s name before succumbing to her injuries.
