Plasma-R equipped "Mogia"-class KR cruiser

The original plans for the D6 hulls that were imported from the Klingon Empire called for two plasma-G torpedos. They were not too energy-hungry and still packed a powerful punch. This was to allow for versitility in mission... a major requirement for the Romulan Stellar Navy at the time. It was assumed the the Old-Series Warbird-type (WB+, WE(R), KE, and KVL) ships would provide heavy torpedo support if the need arose.

However this plan, as with most others, did not survive first contact with the enemy. To test the new ships, the Romulans decided to provoke a skirmish with a Gorn fleet using several small police ships. The plan was that The Gorn would follow the small ships across the Neutral Zone where they would meet with the massed firepower of 6 WB+. A squadron of KR's ("Mogia"-class) that were hanging just out of sensor range would then sweep in and destroy the shocked Gorn ships while the Warbirds pounded on them from long range.

Reality is different from planing, however. Gorn scouts detected the Warbirds while they were at warp, desperately trying to make it to the rondevous point. They attacked them first, destroying the slow ships with relative ease. None of the Warbirds survived. The police ships, witness to the whole debacule, contacted the "Mogia's" and suicidally attacked the Gorn fleet to stall till the cruisers could arrive. However High Command interviened, not willing to loose the new "Mogia's" for lack of the Warbird's R-torps, and the help never came. The Romulans lost 9 ships at a cost of 1 Gorn light cruiser.

Afterwards, plans came up to modify the "Mogia"/D6 hull to carry a plasma-R so that each fleet of the imports could have a support squadron that could actually fly along with the rest of the fleet. The boom phasers were removed and replaced with a plasma-R. The phasers were replaced on the wings with a fourth phaser being added (2 ph-1's LP, 2 ph-1's RP) to protect the ship as the large torp charged. The heavy-torpedo "Mogia's" proved successful in the early General War, and were refitted with the rest of the fleet. They were successful enough, in fact, that a few of the C7 hulls recieved from the Klingons were outfitted in the same manner.
