channels of today's public television and came across an interesting sight on the Discovery Channel: an elephant defecating on the ground and people picking it up gratefully. Not to sound ignorant...but it didn't look right. I gave it a chance though and after watching them boil the feces, dry it out, and work their magic, the people had created paper. I was absolutely fascinated and couldn't stop talking about it for days, surely this would be something huge; a substitution for trees! Protection for elephants! The thing was...no one believed me much less had anyone heard about this. How could we possibly get this out and about to people when no one would even believe it was true? Most people stuck up their nose in disgust! I was 14 when I watched the program in eighth grade I couldn't do much about it as I was only one person, and being an adolescent I wasn't well heard. In my freshman year of high school I took it upon myself to study up on the subject during our speech unit. I searched everywhere for information, and was amazed at how little there was. There were only three somewhat official sites in which gave reasonable information and supported the cause. Nonetheless the speech came through and my classmates, though at first found it amusing, were interested. Their reactions were they thought it was a joke and so in order to prove it I went online and ordered a five piece stationary pack of elephant dung paper. I figured if I could get a class of twenty to get interested perhaps I could go online where I could reach many people and tell them of this discovery. My goal is to give out history and information on elephant dung paper so as to tell people how it's created, what it's like, and how we can make a difference and try to make somewhat of a transition from cutting down trees to taking something away that will otherwise go to waste. I know it sounds silly but if you think about it we're saving trees, and in order to get the feces we need to have the elephants so we'd be providing protection for them! I just hope that everyone understands how important this is and I hope you enjoy this site! |
