6. Mason Lillard STURGILL was born on 15 Aug 1892 in Ashe Co. North Carolina. Family Search Ancestral File (AFN:HW4M-KB) He died in 1971 in Ashe Co. North Carolina. The Sturgill farm is located in Ashe County North Carolina on the Roundabout Road #1308. This farm has been in the Sturgill family since 1806 and has had 6 different Sturgill owners. First being Francis Sturgill who was born in Green County Virginia 1755 and as a youth moved to Allegany County NC with his family where they settled by the New River. He later married Rebecca Hash about 1776. He enlisted in the Montogomery County Militia and was in the battle of Kings Mountain. In 1806 Francis bought some 600 acres of land of land on the head waters of the New River in Ashe County near the Tennessee line. It's not known if Francis lived on this land because he died in 1807. Francis and Rebecca had 12 children. After Francis' death the land was passed to his son, Joel, who was to be the second owner of this farm in 1813. Joel and his wife Rachel Waters raised their children here on this farm, but in later years went to Scott County Virginia and then on to Missouri where his wife died in 1864. Joel died in Scott County Virginia in 1875 and the farm then passed to Joel's son William. He and his wife Sarah lived here the rest of their lives and are buried in the Sturgill cemetery on this farm. William left the land to his son Lewis Jackson who married Naomi Miller. Lewis Jackson was a Magistrate in Ashe county. He was also a blacksmith and a farmer. They had 10 children and he lived out his life on the farm. He died in 1927. Lewis Jackson Sturgill left the farm to his son Mason Lillard Sturgill who married Mary Houser from Virginia. Mason operated a post office and store on Roundabout Road, it was called Parker at that time. He also ran a corn mill and was a farmer. He died in 1971. Mason and Mary had 5 children. At the present time (1999) the farm belongs to his son and wife Martin and Wilma Sturgill. He has been the owner since 1986. He was married to Mary Elizabeth HOUSHER on 22 Mar 1914 in Ashe Co.
