A dollar costs man RM30mil jackpot

LOS ANGELES: For want of a dollar, US$7.9mil (RM30mil) was lost. A 22-year-old Utah man failed to put a dollar coin into a Wendover, Nevada, slot machine and it cost him a jackpot worth US$7.96mil (RM30.2mil). Instead he walked away with a US$10,000 (RM38,000) consolation prize.

It all happened on Wednesday morning at the State Line Hotel and Casino just across the Utah state line, said casino spokesman Buddy Frank.

Kirk Tolman, a steel worker from a Salt Lake City suburb, was playing at a three-coin Megabucks jackpot machine and talking to a friend when the unexpected happened and a row of "Megabucks'' signs came up.

"He was just shaking his head. He seemed somewhat chagrined, but not as morose as I would have been. He said he always plays three coins but wasn't paying attention because he was there with his friend,'' said Frank.

The jackpot-that-got-away would have been the largest in the casino's history if Tolman had put in a third dollar, eclipsing the previous high of US$1.3mil (RM4.9mil).--Reuters
