32 charged with offences linked to clashes in Kg Medan

PETALING JAYA: Thirty-two people, including five soldiers and a fireman, were charged here yesterday at two magistrate's courts with various offences linked to the recent clashes in the Kampung Medan area.

The offences are possession of weapons during a riot, possession of offensive weapons in public places, unlawful assembly and voluntarily causing hurt.

They allegedly committed the offences between 12.05am on March 10 and 12.35pm on March 13. Those charged were part of the 148 remanded in connection with the clashes.

Nine pleaded guilty while the others claimed trial. Two of those who pleaded guilty were sentenced.

Hanef Osman was jailed for three months for possession of a long steel pipe in Taman Medan at 12.30am on March 12 while Badrul Hisham Kamarudin was fined RM2,000 for unlawful assembly in Kampung Medan at 10pm on March 11. The other seven who pleaded guilty were Idris Mat Dahari, 43, Kifli Norad, 52, S. Anandan, 32, Mat Wazir Hasar, 27, Ismail Husin, 27, Ishak Mohd Ali, 56, Samsudin Abas, 53.

They are expected to be sentenced today.

The seven were charged with possession of weapons like catapult, baton and parangs. They admitted to committing the offences in Taman Datuk Harun, Taman Medan, Kampung Lindungan and Sungai Way.

Ismail also faces a second charge of causing hurt to K. Muralitharan, 26, in Sungai Way at 11pm on March 10.

The 23 who claimed trial were charged with having in their possession various types of weapons like a scythe, knives, a small rake, parangs and molotov cocktails in Kampung Setinggan Penaga Indah, Kampung Penaga Jaya, Taman Lindungan Jaya, Taman Datuk Harun, Taman Medan, Kampung Lindungan and Sungai Way.

Those who claimed trial were Haslan Saidina Ali, 20, M. Raman, 31, Hamzah Dalip, 22, Jalil Abdullah, Mohd Shahbili Ibrahim, Nor Azmi Abdul Manap, Mohd Kamal Mohamed, Sarudin Wan Rahul, Mohd Asri Rahul, Mohd Najib Rahmat, Jamaludin Yahya, fireman Khairudin Tasrio, Rajali Sabran, Saiful Rejal Hashim, Zaidi Abdul Malek and G. Salvaraj.

The five soldiers from the Sungai Besi camp are Ramzi Hassan, Mohd Faizal Mustapa, Mohd Isa Abdul Ghani, Rashidi Hamzah and Sahak Kaus.

They were jointly charged with possession of five parangs and one knife at Taman Datuk Harun on March 10. Their case is fixed for mention on April 11.

One group was charged before magistrate Noor Hayati Mat while the other before Suraiya Mustasa Kamala.

All the adults were allowed bail of between RM4,000 and RM5,000. Their cases will be mentioned between March 21 and April 11.

Two juveniles, aged 17 and 18, also claimed trial.

The younger was charged with having a parang at Taman Datuk Harun on March 11 while the other with having two molotov cocktails at Taman Medan on March 11.

The case of the 17-year-old will be mentioned on March 29. He was allowed bail of RM2,000.

The date for the other juvenile's case is not known.
