Move to fight crime against women

PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Women and Family Development will work hand in hand with women's groups to battle all forms of crime and violence against women.

Its minister Datuk Sharizat Abdul Jalil said that crime against women was a national issue and the community was responsible for working towards its eradication.

"I appeal to everyone to take seriously cases of crimes committed against women,'' she said after the launch of the All Women's Action Society information kit on rape in conjunction with International Women's Day 2001 yesterday.

Sharizat said that crimes like rape occurred because of lack of respect for women.

"Please treat women with love and respect and do not violate their rights,'' she said.

Earlier, Sharizat launched Rotary International District 3300's Avoidable Blindness Eye Care Project in Kuala Lumpur.

She thanked the club for its social service projects and said that Malaysians were able to carry out such services due to the country's stability.
