Max Weber was born in Germany, and studied law. He is known as one of the founding fathers of sociology, but was also an econmist. He believed there were two basic features of advanced capitalism: extensive division of labour and a hierarchical ad ministration. According to Weber, these two features created a new middle-class whose position depended on human capital rather than labour or physical capital.
Like David hume, Weber believed that it was possible to have a value-free social science, and that economics should work toward this.
His entire academic career was centered on acounting for the rationalization of western culture. A reflection of this concern can be seen most vividly in his book," The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism".
