Walt Whitman Rostow was born on October 7, 1916 in New York City and is primarily known for his development of the linear stages theory of economic development in "The Stages of Economic Growth; A Non-Communist Manifesto". From 1950 to 1961, Rostow was a Professor of Economic History at MIT. He was the Council Chairman for the State Department of Policy Planning from 1961 to 1966 and the Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs from 1966 to 1969. He has been a Professor of Economics and History at the University of Texas since 1969. Rostow was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969. This medal, which was established in 1945 by President Truman to "recognize notable service in the war", was reintroduced by President Kennedy "as an honor for distinguished civilian service in peace time." Recipients of this medal hold a wide range of occupations. The following is a handful of people who have been awarded this medal: Thurgood Marshall (1993); Colin Powell (1993); Martha Raye (1993); C. Everett Koop (1995); Rosa Parks (1996); Jimmy Carter (1999).
