Arthur Okun

San Jose State University: A Quick Analysis of Okun's Law (J. Lang)

Arthur Okun was born in 1928. He taught at Yale University and, from February 15, 1968 to January 20, 1969, he was Chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisors, a job that entails assisting and advising the President in the preparation of the Economic Report. His name is associated with Okun's Law, which states that there is an empirical relationship between high real output growth and unemployment. The equation is as follows:

Change in unemployment = -0.5 * (growth - 3%)

This relationship was developed in a paper he wrote in the 1960's called, "Potential GNP, Its measurement and Significance".
