Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough

"But there's a danger in loving somebody too much,
And its sad when you know its your heart you can't trust,
There's a reason why people don't stay where they are,
Baby sometimes love just ain't enough..."

Justin stared silently at the floor, he could feel her presence beside him, yet, he could not look at her. Too many emotions were running through his body, too many thoughts were boggling his mind. The room seemed to close in around him, he felt suffocated, straining for each breath. He hid his face in his hands, closing his eyes, praying for relief. He felt tears burning in his eyes, soon they made trails down his cheeks. He got up quickly and walked out of the room, wiping away any traces of weakness. He moved swiftly down the hallway and up the stairs to his bedroom, throwing himself on the bed.

He hugged the pillow tight to his body and inhaled her scent that lingered on it. That smell used to comfort him, now it make him sick. He hated everything about it, all the memories it conjured up. He had given her his all, and she betrayed him. Betrayed his trust, crushed his faith. She did the one thing that was unforgivable, unforgettable.

Teaghan sat on the couch, waiting to see if Justin would come back down. She knew she had hurt him terribly, but she just couldn't hold back anymore. The guilt of keeping a secret from him was killing her, and now she had killed the relationship. It was surely over now, no amount of love could mend the destruction she had caused. Teaghan rose and walked out into the hall, standing at the foot of the stairs. She gazed upward and considered climbing the stairs to say good-bye. She took the first step and began to tremble, she knew this would be the final good-bye.

"I'm so sorry Justin, so, so sorry..." she thought to herself as she peered into his bedroom. She could see his body shaking with anger and hear his deep breathing. She feared disturbing him, but couldn't make herself leave without saying good-bye. That's all she wanted to do- was say good-bye. She shuffled into the room and stood a few feet away from him, twisting her hands and biting down on her bottom lip.
"Jus...Justin," she managed to say.
"What?" he said sharply into his pillow.
"I'm going to go now..." she paused, waiting for his reaction. He didn't respond, he remained silent- waiting for her to continue. "I'm sorry," she said as she turned to leave, but stopped in his doorway, facing the hall. "I love you," she added.
"Go!" Justin shouted, startling Teaghan. She didn't think he had heard her, but apparently she was wrong. She moved quickly down the hall to the top of the stairs, she paused and looked back at his room. He was standing in his doorway.
"You..." he said sternly, pointing at her, "you don't know what love is...you say you love me, but you don't show it..."
Teaghan stared at him, she had never seen him this way.
"Justin..." she began.
"Don't!" he yelled, putting up his hand to silence her. Teaghan closed her eyes, stunned by his harshness. She began making her way down the stairs, nearly reaching the bottom before he stopped her. "I love you baby," he said mimicking her, "If you loved me, loved me the way you claim to love me...you would have never, ever...you wouldn't have even let the thought cross your mind!"
She looked up at him, he was standing at the top of the stairs. His eyes were blazing and his cheeks tear stained. The veins on his arms were bulging as he gripped the railing.
"Don't do this Justin...I explained what happened, I told you everything...I made a mistake, a horrible mistake...and I have to live with the guilt of it everyday..." she shot back, a new amount of courage and strength filled her being.
"Guilt? You have to live with the guilt...GOOD! Damn it, Teaghan...5 years...I have been in love with you, faithful to you, for 5 years...look at this..." Justin disappeared for a moment, then returned holding a small velvet box. He held it up showing it to her, "See this? I was going to ask you to marry me tonight..."
Teaghan drew in a sharp breath, that was the last thing she had expected. The heart wrenching pain was unbearable...intolerable. She fell to her knees and began to sob. Uncontrollably tears pouring from her green eyes, unstoppable shaking took over her being.
"Don't cry...you have no right to cry..." Justin said looking down at her bent over in tears. "You had the affair...you slept with another man...you lied to me all those nights...working late...that's bullshit, Teaghan...now I know where you were! You were with him, making love to another man...I can't stand the sight of you...get out," he said, anger apparent in every word he spoke.
Teaghan stood up and turned towards the front door.
"But I didn't love him...I love you," she said, unable to look at him.
"No you don't..." Justin said, maintaining the same tone.
"I do..." she cried.
"Out!" he screamed, frustration and anger taking over.
Teaghan opened the front door and left, slamming it behind her. Justin remained standing at the top of the stairs, tears streaming down his cheeks as he watched his first love walked out of his life.

"Baby sometimes love just ain't enough."
