Ah look over at mah fiancée and smile. Tabitha was leaning over the counter, lookin' at the rings with something that bordered on obsession.
"Which one do ya like?" Ah ask her, smiling softly.
"I don't know. That one's really pretty, but it's kind of…I don't know…big?" Tabitha said, looking up at me.
"Here, Ah thought you liked big jewelry." Ah tell her, chuckling slightly.
"I do. But that thing looks like it break my finger if I put it on! I want an engagement ring, not the Hope Diamond." Tabitha smirks, rubbing her pregnant stomach.
"Well, Ah guess there is that." Ah laugh, pulling her as close as her swollen belly will allow.
We're at the mall pickin' out Tabitha's engagement ring, and our wedding bands, and so far, we weren't havin' a whole lot of luck. Tabitha just can't seem to find anything that she likes for some reason.
"Well, how about that one?" Ah ask, pointing at one in particular.
"That's too…round." Tabitha disagrees.
"Picky, aren't we?" Ah tease here softly, wrappin' an arm around her shoulder.
"Yes, we are. We have the right to be, this is the only engagement ring that I am ever going to get." Tabitha said, her voice firm. Ah laugh and kiss the top of her head, feelin' happier then Ah have in a long time.
She's finally stopped worryin' about me leavin' her! For months now, all she had done was worry that one day Ah was gonna pack up and leave her and the babies. That package from her momma or whoever sent it had really helped.
That package was really buggin' me. How had…whoever sent it, known to send it to mah house? For another thing, how had that person known that Tabitha and Ah were getting' married anyway? We hadn't told anybody out side of mah family and the rest of the X-Men.
Ah was still ponderin' that when Tabitha smacked mah arm. Ah look down at her, feelin' somewhat guilty for not payin' attention.
"Ah'm sorry. What did you say?" Ah ask her.
Tabitha rolls her eyes and then smiles. "I asked if you wanted to leave. I can't find anything that I like, you aren't much of a help."
"Ah am helping." Ah say before Ah realize that Tabitha's kidding.
"Sam Guthrie, you couldn't shop your way out of a paper bag!" She informs me, putting her hands on what is left of her waist.
"Ah could too!" Ah defend mah admittedly meager shopping ability.
Tabitha snorts through her nose and tugs me toward the exit. Ah willing follow, seeing as though Ah had been ready to leave before we got here.
As we are passing a little jeweler's Tabitha suddenly stops and walks up to a display window. Ah follow her, mildly confused.
"Honey, haven't we already stopped here?" Ah ask her, looking up at the sign.
"Yeah, but I didn't see that one…isn't it pretty?" Tabitha asked, pointing at a ring in the back.
She's right. The ring she's picked out is very pretty. It looks to be about a half caret, but is beautifully cut and polished to a shine. It has delicate gold work around the diamond, and a slim band. It isn't overly big or flashy, but it's beautiful just the same. It looks the way Tabitha would if she was a ring. Ah know it sounds corny to say it that way, but it's the truth. It's very small and delicate-looking, but still had an off beat sort of beauty to it.
"So you finally found one you like, huh?" Ah ask, hugging her from behind.
"Yes! Now all we have to do is find some bands…"Tabitha trails off turning in mah arms to look at me.
"One thing at a time, sweetie." Ah laugh, looking into her beautiful blue eyes. She is so…amazingly beautiful; it still takes mah breath away.
"Well, alright." Tabitha mock pouts. Ah laugh and we walk into the store together.
The sales lady walks up and smiles. "What can Ah do for y'all today?"
"Well, we like that engagement ring in the window." Ah tell her, pointing to where the ring was.
"A lovely choice." The woman said, unlocking the cabinet and pulling the ring out. Tabitha smiles at me, and Ah smile back.
The woman comes back and hands the ring to me, and Ah turn to Tabitha.
"Well, what do ya think?" Ah ask her.
She squeals in utter delight and bounces on her toes. Ah can't help but laugh when she does. Ah pull it out of the box and slip it onto her small finger. It fits almost perfectly.
"I love it!" Tabitha cries, throwing her arms around mah neck.
"Thank you." Ah whisper a small pray to heaven before Ah let her go. This means that we can finally go home!
"That particular ring also has a pair of bands that match it." The sales lady tells us, watching with a gently smile. Must be fun, to be able to watch young couples come in all day and buy rings.
"It does?" Tabitha asked, brightening.
"Yes…here, let me show you." The lady offers, pulling out a selection of rings. Tabitha ohhs and ahhs for a minute, before the lady shows us the rings that go with Tabitha's engagement ring.
They weren't overly flash, or big, but still they had a certain appeal about them. They were just simple golden bands, that looked like they were made to last a long, long time. Ah like them, but Ah'm not certain how Tabitha feels. Ah look over at her, and notice the smile on her face.
"I like them!" Tabitha tells me, looking up with pure blue eyes.
"Ah do too." Ah agree, again silently thanking God.
Neither the engagement ring nor the bands were very expensive. In fact, they were right in our price range!
Tabitha slipped her hand into mine as we walked toward the car, our rings securely in mah pocket and her diamond on her left hand. Nothin' on earth could ruin this moment for me. Ah knew we were gonna be happy for the rest of our lives.
