On to something of a bit more relevance (in my eyes at least). Recently, Cadey posted a rant in reference to a study that shed a not so positive light on the Online Existence. I must say that being online is not the most fulfilling way to spend one’s life. However, it does provide a unique opportunity to interaction with people one would otherwise never meet and never get the chance to experience. It also is a form of entertainment much like watching television, playing video games, etc, just with a more personal edge. You can be whoever you want to be online. You can explore different ways of thinking. And I don’t think that Television or playing games really gives one the chance to expand how it is that they think. I know I don’t need the Internet. I know I am not addicted to it. I know that I could live without it. The thing is, I enjoy it being a part of my life. And I discovered something very interesting. I always wondered why it was that I could never find anyone in the place that I live that really can relate to me. And now I know why. They are all online too, searching for the ones that understand. The online world is a haven from the mediocrity that plagues most of society. People can’t hide behind trendy clothes and pop culture online. It boils down to conversation. Who can articulate an intelligent thought and keep up with the flow. There are no games. It’s straight on. People talking to people. No where to hide. One can’t feign intelligence. And to a person such as myself, who holds intelligence in very high esteem, that makes the Internet worth any sacrifice I might have to make in my “real” life. Perhaps one day, I will be able to find people here in the real world that can understand and fulfill my needs as well as the ones online.
