Each year on Decoration Day someone brings three flags to
decorate the three unmarked graves of Union soldiers in Weems
Cemetery at Van Hill near the Hawkins/Greene County line. Over
the years the first names of the men have been lost - known only
as Smith, Jeffers, and Jones. These men were possibly from the
Van Hill area or Greene County. It is said the graves face to
the west rather than the usual way of facing east. They were the
first to be buried in Weems Cemetery, with the exception of one
other man who died in 1860. These men lived on the bordering
area where several Confederate men lived, and also near the Local
Confederate Home Guards. There may have been a skirmish and they
were killed near there. Perhaps the full story will surface
someday and the first names of these men will be known - then
someone can get tombstones for them. Do you have any information
on these men?
I am trying to find out about the history of war valley road and
how it came to be called that. I own a farm on that road and
the rumor is that 2 confederate soldiers are buried on my farm.
I would like to try and find out if that possibility is even
true and if so, the curcumstances surrounding how they might
have gotten buried there.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

My GG Grandfather, George Washington Bryson, Sgt, Co. F, Thomas
Legion, CSA was killed in action on Dec 31, 1863 in Rogersville,
TN. I believe this is over a month past the Battle of
Rogersville. I have not found any reference to Thomas's Legion
having taken part in the battle. We are searching for where
G.W.Bryson might be buried? He was originally from Haywood, NC.
One account indicated that he was involved in the Battle of
Strawberry Plains? I have not heard of this Battle. His
Confederate records only indicate that he was killed in
Rogersville. Can anyone provide me with any more info.

James Milton Fralix joined the Confederate Army in December, 1862. He
first served in Company K, 37th TN Infantry. He returned to
Hawkins County after being paroled near Greensboro, N.C. on May
1, 1865. I welcome any new info on him or his parentage. He is

Russell, b. 1869 in Rogersville. He married Florence Cordelia
Crumley Davis. By 1900 they had moved to Bristol VA. My father,
William's son, was born in Bristol TN. (James Allen Russell in
1898). PLEASE get in touch if you have info on them. Am
particularly interested in info on JOSHUA RUSSELL, born around
1783 - trying to confirm if he DID come from Ireland and from

100 years of age and they lived on a large farm area in Tenn.
