John W. Dinsmore in his Civil War Questionnaire stated that he was a Federal Soldier in the 1st TN Lt. Art., listing companies "A" & "F" in which he served. He further stated that he enlisted at Rogersville, Tennessee. Dinsmore wrote that they were in battle at Big Creek, three miles east of Rogersville after that they went to Camp Nelson in Kentucky, then Nashville to Zollicoffer's house, then West Tennessee to Camp Gilliam.

The company remained in Middle Tennessee on duty on the line of railroad until it was mustered out of service in July 1865.

The men from Hawkins County had joined Company "F", as John Dinsmore had stated in his CWQ; however, the only record of this battery found in the Official Records was on April 10, 1864, when it was reported in Brigadier General Theophilus T. Garrard's Brigade, Department of the Ohio, with Headquarters at Knoxville. Adjutant General Brownlow's reports state that on April 13, 1864, the men enlisted for Battery "F" were transferred to Battery "A" by order of the Military Governor of Tennessee, Andrew Johnson.

Dinsmore was not captured in the Battle of Big Creek, near Rogersville, as were Newton Richards and John G. Brummitt, both of A Company. John G. Brummitt was sent to Andersonville prison March 4, 1864. Also capture with these men were two men of the 8th TN Infantry: James A. Davidson, G Co; and Thomas H. Brown, H Co.
