While you were out

I grew a backbone
Called somebody I hadn’t talked to in years
Went out of this ugly place with the bed on the floor
And figured I’m due about 14 years of payback, honey
So I’m here, but just for a while
Just long enough
To get the clothes off the top of the dresser
The soap from the sink

And I’m gone

Cause I finally went and did what you have been
Discouragin me from all these years
I lived a while and I knew I could live without you
I laughed some and I know you ain’t funny
I talked to my family and they still want to be mine
And now I’m not yours.
Maybe you think this is sorta sudden
You whine and pace and put your hands on that belly you made
But I stopped listening
You been lazy all this time
But I kept working
I’m gonna leave you in the mess you’ve been lyin’ in
So take your ignorance and your cheap life and your no-good relatives
You already took everything else from me – what’s a few more things?
And move on, because I am
Moving out from under the weight you put on me
All the backward, plain, homely ways you got me in
And I’m going to be a whole person
Without you.

I guess you shouldn’t be surprised
You should have seen it coming
But I guess you just weren’t paying attention
I guess it all just passed you by
While you were out.
