sharp scent of summer coming
bare feet on cracked concrete pounding dirty
shouts- “Come in!”
smell of beans, cornbread
bland hot heavy odor of potatoes and
heady steam
dusty floorboards groan with footsteps
back and forth, stove and table
creaking, unswept
kitchen
bodies and sweat
moving stirring cutting
tiptoe to wash
grimy hands in the bathroom sink
through the archway
chairs pulled out
eating little and quickly
back out through the slamming screen door to lightning bugs
shouts “..not long!”
smell of the clear night
honeysuckle on the fence
dog’s fur through small fingers
cold rusty chains wrapping
around themselves, twisting
tighter, letting go!
wheeee
bare legs flying
barking dogs
the car turning to a big black shadow nothing
under the carport
grass turns cold to toe touches
smell of wet, hose moving in the grass
watering flowers now that the sun’s gone down
clank of dishes
smell of suds and hot through the open kitchen window.
