~Chapter Three~

Brian and Chris were in the kitchen. Brian was telling Chris to drink water to help purify his system, and of course take an asprin for his headache.

"Why did you drink so much?" Brian asked him.

"It didn't seem like much at the time, and I thought I could handle it," he explained while popping the second asprin into his mouth.

"Lay off for a while unless you wanna pickle your liver," Brian warned.

"I know."

"Do you hear crying?"

They listened for a minute. Brian wanted to know what was wrong, and so he headed to where the sound was coming from. Sure enough, Brittney had left the door to her room half opened. He knocked on the door.

"Go away!" she yelled in between sobs.

"Are you okay?" he was truly concened.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Sometimes you just need to get something out," she explained.

"Sometimes it helps to talk, too. So if you feel like talking about it, I'll be out here, okay?"

"Okay," she said, even though she had no intention of talking to him.

Why on earth would he want to hear my problems? I've known him for what, two days? she thought.

Brian and Chris became good friends durring the early part of ninety-three. They wantched basketball games together, bowled and whatever else. It took her a while, but Brittney adventually got used to Brian being around so much. But, she kept her distance. It was the only way she knew how to keep from getting hurt. She'd still watch movies with them at their house, and sometimes she'd go bowling with them. She felt comfortable knowing that her brother was around. Little did she know that she was getting to where she was okay around Brian, too.

"Hello?" Brittney asked when she picked up the ringing phone one day in January of ninety four.

"Hey, Brit, it's Brian. What's up?" he wondered.

"Not much. I got a 'C' in math, and that's not making my dad real happy," she told him.

Brian laughed. "Okay. Is Chris around?"

"Yeah, just a sec." Brittney covered the reciever and yelled down the hall for her brother.

When Chris picked up the phone, she headed to her room where she listened to her New Kids on the Block tape, which had been collecting dust in her room while Boys II Men was in her tape player. Today, though, she felt like singing along with "The Right Stuff" for a little while.

Chris banged on her door five minutes later, asking if she wanted to go over to Brian's and shoot some hoops with some of their friends. Brittney raised her eyebrow.

"You want me to go to Bian's with you?" she wondered, not believing a word. He never asked her to go anywhere with them.

"Well, Bri wanted you to come," he explained.

"Figured as much," Brit laughed. "Yeah, I'll go. Gimme a couple minutes."

"Come on Brat! You really don't want to go. I mean, you love me and you wouldn't want to ruin my reputation, right?" he urged.

"I'll go," she repeated, closing her door.
