April 10: Wednesday-sailing day!
9:30 to 11:30am-Passengers arrive in Southampton and begin to board Titanic.
Noon- The Titanic casts off and begins her way on her maiden voyage.
6:30pm-Titanic arrives in Cherbourg, France.
8;10pm-Titanic leaves for Queenstown, Ireland.
April 11: Thursday-
1:30pm-Titanic leaves Queenstown for New York.
April 12 and 13: Friday and Saturday-Titanic sails through calm, clear weather.
April 14: Sunday-Seven ice warnings are received through the day.
11:40pm-The lookouts spot an iceberg "dead ahead". The iceberg strikes the Titanic on the starboard side of the bow. ( the right side). Water starts rushing in immediately, bringing in 7 tons per second.
11:50pm-Water is now up to 14 feet in the front part of the ship.
April 15: Monday
12:00am- The captain is informed the Titanic can only stay afloat for an hour & 1/2, maybe 2 hours. Capt. Smith gives orders to call for help over the radio. Water has filled to G deck already. Titanic is starting to list. 8000 tons of water has now rushed in.
12:05am-Orders to get passengers and crew on deck and to uncover the lifeboats are given. (There are only enough lifeboats for less than half the passengers however.)
12:20am-The bow is now only 15 feet away from being submerged.
12:25am-The order to start loading women and children first is given. The Carpathia, about 58 miles southeast of the Titanic, picks up Titanic's distress signal and heads full speed to the rescue.
12:40am-All 6 watertight compartments are filled with water. 25,000 tons of water now taken in.
12:45am-The first lifeboat is safely lowered away. It is able to carry 65, but leaves with only 28 aboard. The first of 8 distress rockets are fired.
1:15am-The tilt of the deck grows steeper. Lifeboats now begin to leave more fully loaded than before.
1:40am-Most of the lifeboats forward now have gone. Passengers begin to move back to the stern area.
2:05am-The last lifeboat leaves. There are still over 1,500 people left on the decks of Titanic. The tilt of the Titanic's deck grows steeper and steeper.
2:17am-The last call for help over the radio is sent out. Capt. Smith tells all crew members-"Every man for himself." The Titanic's bow plunges under. Many of the passengers and crew jump overboard. The Titanic's forward funnel collapses and crushes a number of people.
2:18am-The Titanic's lights flicker and then go out. Several survivors see the ship break in two and the bow section sinks.
2:20am-The Titanic's broken off stern section levels back into the water, then rises upright. It again tilts itself high up into the air. There it stands for a moment, fills with water, and sinks into the sea. Those people struggling in the ice cold waters begin to freeze to death. Screams for help are heard and eventually begin to taper off until silence, as one by one they begin to die from the icy waters.
3:30am-Carpathia's rockets are seen by survivors in the lifeboats.
4:10am-The first lifeboat is picked up by the Carpathia.
8:50am-The Carpathia begins to head for New York with only 705 survivors aboard.
April 18:
9:00pm-The Carpathia arrives in New York.
April 22 to May 15: Several ships are sent to the disaster area to recover bodies. A total of 328 bodies are found floating in the area.
1985
September 1: A joint French-American team led by Dr. Robert Ballard discovers the Titanic wreck.
1986
July: Dr. Ballard returns to the Titanic wreck site and in a submarine he explores and photographs the entire wreck site.
1987 to 1994-
Salvaging expeditions to the wreck site in 1987, 1993, and 1994 recover many artifacts which eventually become part of a touring exhibit.
1996- An attempt to raise a section of the Titanic's hull is made by RMS Titanic however is unsuccessful.
1998-
Another attempt to raise a piece of Titanic's hull was made and this time was successful. The "BIG PIECE", as it is referred to, was recovered and is now on display with the touring exhibits.
