The Story of Annie Meek

Annie Meek was about 17. She lived in Ireland and had been taking care of her mother who was sick. She had done this for about 3 years. Since Annie's dad had died when she was little, she was the one in charge. In 1911, her mother died. Annie was now left alone with her little sisters, Kathryn-15, and Jenny-7. Annie was also engaged to a man named John Davies who lived in England. John sent Annie a letter in April of 1912, and he asked her to with him to America. His brothers, Alfred-24, and Joseph-17, were invited to go with their uncle, James Lester. Their uncle had gathered some money so that the Davies' could go to America, in Michigan, where some of John's brothers already lived. John promised that he would give Annie the wedding that she had always dreamed of.

Annie was very willing to go with her love, but her sisters were still young. But, she knew that her love for John was greater than anything at her home. She decided to go with them to America. Kathryn was greatly upset at Annie for agreeing to go. Annie explained to Kathryn how her life had always been spent giving to others and nothing was ever about her. She had spent her entire life caring for her sisters while they were young because her mother always worked. She had to escape the horrors of caring for her mother while she was sick. So with that, Annie left. Annie met with John and they boarded the Titanic as third class passengers. On board, she had a common third class cabin, the exact number is unknown. After a few days, Joseph asked Annie to get off with him when they reached New York. Joseph truly did love Annie. But Annie confessed her undying love for John. So Joseph left Annie alone. Annie and John were always seen holding hands. No matter where they were, they were always together. They often took walks, watched the stars, the air, and even watched sunrises. They were absolutely inseparable.

John was often reading in his books and making calculatioons. Annie was always reading and looking at how handsome John was.

The night of the sinking, John was writing and Annie was reading. Annie decided that it was getting late. It was around 11:00 pm when she asked John if he would like to go for a walk before they went to sleep. John was busy and his books and told her to go ahead. So, Annie kissed his cheek and went up to the deck. She leaned on the railings for awhile. The sky was really clear and she loved the stars. She was on the left side of the ship when the ship hit the iceberg. She felt a slight shudder, but nothing to cause great alarm. So she asked other passengers on deck what had happened, and they gossiped for a few seconds until the iceberg flew past them. So they all talked about their theories. But, they still believed the ship was unsinkable, so they didn't panic. Annie stayed around to see if a crew members could tell her what happened. Then she realized that John was under deck and that he would want to know what happened. So, she said goodbye to the other passengers and went down the steps. She got down to her deck and heard screaming coming through the halls. She came to a stop as she was the gate pulled across the hall. And behind the gate, stood her love. John was wild-eyed and frightened. She ran to his side. She told him of the iceberg and of the shudder she felt. John then told her to get to a lifeboat as he had been instructed to do. She looked around for someone who could unlock the gate. But there was no one. They were two souls destined to be together and they were separated by a simple gate. It was then that Annie realized her fate. Annie grabbed John's hands. She sank to the floor and he followed. They stayed on the floor embrassing until the cold water came trickling down the steps. But the cold didn't seem to matter to them. And the people behind the gates screamed in horror as they realized their fate. But the two didn't seem to hear their screams.
