October 30, 1966 Cheri Jo Bates
November 29, 1966 A letter was received by the Riverside Police and the Riverside Enterprise, the letter was labeled “The Confession” It talked about his first killing.
December 20, 1968 David Arthur Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen
July 5, 1969 Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin and Michael Mageau
July 31, 1969, the San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Chronicle, and Vallejo Times-Herald each received letters laying claim to the murders of Faraday, Jensen and Ferrin. Each letter had a different cipher on it, one claimed to reveal his identity, but it did not.

October 13, 1969 a letter to the Chronicle claiming responsibility. 3 patches of Paul’s shirt was sent, but 104 square inches are missing from his shirt.
Early November 1969 another letter was sent to the Chronicle. Had the first appearance of a body count, 7
November 10, 1969 a letter was sent to the Chronicle describing a “death machine” that would explode and destroy a bus full of children. Claimed that it was ready to be used.
This is when he first mentions his killing intent. He claims that the victims he kills, will be his slaves when he joins the afterlife, or his paradise.
March 22, 1970 Kathleen Johns was picked up by the Zodiac Killer, she was able to run away when he came to a stop sign. A sketch was made of his face, but he was still never caught.
April 20, 1970 The Chronicle was sent another letter by the Zodiac Killer. He sent plans for his bus bomb, and another short code. He claimed that his bomb was fail proof, and marked his “score” at 10, SFPD=0
28 April 1970 a post card was sent, taunting the police about his bomb, and the fact that he wanted buttons of his sign.
June 26, 1970 another small code was sent to the Chronicle and he complained that his buttons were not circulated around town.
July 24, 1970 another letter was sent to the Chronicle, again complaining about the lack of Zodiac buttons, but he also confirmed Kathleen Johns tale of being with the zodiac killer. He made a little song about the type of “slaves” that he wanted, he said that he wanted those people of society that would not be missed.
July 26, 1970 Yet another letter to the Chronicle was sent complaining about a lack of buttons. In this letter he claims that he will torture his slaves if nobody will wear the buttons. He has another score of 13-0.
October 5, 1970 The Chronicle receives a letter from the Zodiac Killer bragging about his 13 victims, and his evasiveness from the police.
October 27, 1970 a Halloween postcard was sent to the Chronicle, Kathleen Johns claimed she had received the same postcard, and both Kathleen and the editor believed the card to be a threat on their lives.
March 22, 1971 the only letter sent to the LA Times by the Zodiac Killer, stated the fact that the police will never catch him, and that he has many more victims that are not found. Another score at the bottom said 0-17+
March 29, 1971 A letter was sent to the editor of the Chronicle, it is considered that it is a forgery, because the handwriting is similar, but not exact. Many similarities are found between this letter and his others.
January 29, 1974 The Zodiac Killer writes about how he thought “The Exorcist” was “…the best saterical comidy” that he had ever seen. He now claims that the score is 37-0
February 14, 1974 The Chronicle received another letter from the Zodiac Killer stating that the Symbionese Liberation Army had initials (SLA) that meant “To Kill”
May 8, 1974 The Chronicle receives a letter from the Zodiac Killer about his “…consternation concerning your poor taste + lack of sympathy for the public” because of the movie ad for “Badlands” that stated in 1959 most people were killing time, Kit and Holly were killing people. He goes on to say that murder is unjustifiable, deplorable and has no glorification.
July 8, 1974 The Zodiac Killer sent a letter to the Chronicle about sending a columnist of theirs who would write as “Count Marco.” The Zodiac Killer said that Marco has a disorder, and needs to feel superior.
April 24, 1978 a letter that is not entirely proven authentic was received by the Chronicle saying that the leading inspector (Toschi) was good, but he was smarter and better. He said that he is waiting for a movie about him, and wonders who will play him. His final words were stating that he was finally in control, and the score was SFPD-0, himself-guess.
