QUESTION
I would like to know if smoking pot was wrong or ungodly, seeing as though it's a plant and I was always one to believe God created plants, trees, bushes, ect.
ANSWER
Now, concerning your question about smoking pot. Your question was, "Is smoking pot wrong or ungodly?". The answer to your question is, Yes, but please hear me out. I'm not going to pump all the health reasons to you. To make that argument is pointless. If it is health we are worried about, then we had better not eat any fast food, which is high in fat. For that matter, we had better not live in a city, because of all the exhaust fumes in the air. That is definitely not healthy. (not to say someone shouldn't care about his or her health. They should!) Instead, let us look at this from two other point of views.
First, when someone smokes pot it causes him or her to be in a clouded state of mind. The most common effects being light headed, dizzy, silly/giddy, and/or very spacey. The point is, pot causes the mind to act intoxicated(stoned). The person is not acting sober while smoking pot.
This reaction/behavior of the mind is contrary to what the Lord wants for us. He wants us to be sober minded.
1 Thessalonians 5:6-8
6Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. 8But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.1 Peter 1:13-16
13Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy."How can we be sober minded and clear headed when we smoke pot? We can not. Therefore, by allowing a substance to cloud our thoughts we go against what God say's in His Word.
Now I realize that one argument that's made is. "What about alcohol?". This substance can cause someone's mind to become intoxicated/cloudy. However, it is not God's will for people to get drunk either.
Romans 13:13-14
Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to [fulfill] [its] lusts.Ephesians 5:18
And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,So.. being drunk is wrong too.. The questions might become.. Is God trying to take all our fun away? Why all this about being sober? What does this have to do with my Christian walk? The answer is in this passage..
1 Peter 5:8 8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. When we are not clear headed in our minds, Satan is able to come in and easily tempt us into doing something we might not of done had we been sober and thinking clear. Surely you have to admit many accidents and regretful things have happened to people while under the influence. That's why people are tempted to do drugs and/or get drunk beyond control. Satan knows that once he gets that person in that state of mind it will be easier to pull the person down further. God knows this and that is why He warns us to be sober minded. It's because He cares, not because He's trying to take our fun away.
The second point, which is the main differences between alcohol and pot, alcohol is legal and pot is not. God's will is that we obey the law of our land. (of course as long as it's not contrary to the Word of God.)
Romans 13:1-2
1Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. So, you see, whether or not pot is good or bad for you doesn't change that fact that it's illegal. Think about it, does God want you or anyone else to be arrested because of a plant? Of course not..
So.. is it wrong or ungodly? Yes it is.. Either way, whether being intoxicated or breaking the law it's sin and as we know, sin is wrong and ungodly.
