A 21st Century Slave I was a spy. I have to admit, it’s an unusual former job for a slave, and a Christian, but then, Paul was a bounty hunter and Matthew a tax collector, so, why not a spy? I had been raised Christian. Sunday school, vacation Bible school, church every Sunday, and Bible studies before school, but, as I grew older, my education took precedence over my religious practices. That’s what I thought it was: a religion. No wonder I had no interest. My parents were poor, but I was determined to get a good education. I joined the military. The SEALs taught me how to survive in the world, how to sneak, and lie, and kill. They trained me, sent me to college, and I gave back. I gave my soul to the program. My life was the SEALs and the SEALs were my life. Who needed God when you could kill a man in seconds? Maybe I thought a good enough SEAL could hide from God. For whatever reason, I excelled. Then, They came. How no one knew, when so many were involved, is impossible to say. I think we had become complacent. The first warning, or what we thought was the first warning, was the mass disappearance. Millions gone. Everyone had someone missing, someone they knew. Empty cars, houses, vanishing in front of family and friends, all with seemingly no connection. I know now that there were hundreds of warnings, thousands of signs, but everyone that recognized them vanished. The governments of the world searched desperately for any clue as to how millions disappear with no trace. Not one of the vanished was found. The militaries mobilized, the governments of the world came together as never before. We were scared, and no one could explain it. Oh, there were explanations from the fruit cakes of the world, but there was no firm, rational, scientific explanation. Gradually, the nations realized that only together could we fight an enemy of such power. So, the militaries joined together, lines were erased, races forgotten, and all religions were combined. The new World Government decided an ecumenical religion was needed for peace of mind, and so no one could fight over whose religion was better, all religions were combined into the World Religion. The Bible, the Torah, the Koran, were regarded as archaic texts from a far away time. No more than blips in history. I was still in the SEALs, we had expanded, and now I wasn’t the best of the few, but I was still good.
