Final Fantasy VII Story

You, my dear friends, are about to read a story of epic proportions. This is the story of my life. As I’ve said before and will say again, I truly don’t know if I’d be in the same place I am today if this occurrence had not taken place. I write to you now on January 11, 2004. It’s been seven years since this all happened. I ask you, kind readers, to realize as you read this that I was young, and so the story may, in some places, seem very poorly written. But I dare not alter the originally copy of this amazing story, for in my old age of 16 years, I would feel great anguish at even the smallest letter of deletion that may pass through my fingertips. And so, read on my noble viewers, and discover a story meant for another world…

FINAL FANTASY VII

Final Fantasy VII is, and will always be, my favorite game. Although I do no longer play it often, it was once all I could think about. It was with me when I tried to hook up my Playstation to London, when I moved the Playstation downstairs, when I moved it to yet another room, and when I moved it back upstairs. I will never forget the long hours I would try and try at the game. I loved it. Sephiroth is the most awesome villain in the world. My personal favorite team was Red XIII, who I named Simba ( I was pretty young when I played that first time, but I think I’d still name him Simba today). Barrett, the cool gun-for-a-hand dude, and Cloud, with his really cool big-ass sword and could slice anyone up in seconds, whom I first named Megan. Simba was my favorite, but I loved them all and each had a place in my heart.

If anyone asked me what my favorite game was or ever will be, I will say “FF7”. It was the first Final Fantasy game and the first RPG I ever played.

This is a story of how I first discovered Final Fantasy VII. Who knows where I’d be this very day, if it weren’t for that small coincidence.

This took place in 1997 I was going to visit my good friend Maddie Childs who had just recently moved to Texas. As I followed her through the house one day, I saw Maddie’s older brother Tim, who I had seen many times before. I observed him playing a game with a little person. There were some Hawaiian hula girls around and it looked like someplace at a beach. I took very little notice but ended up seeing the cover of the game. I read Final Fantasy and then some roman numbers that I didn’t really know. I wasn’t at all interested and was once again off with Maddie.

Sometime later I was back in Massachusetts, at Block Buster, trying to pick out a video game for the weekend. As I scanned the isles , a certain game caught my attention. I saw the familiar cover of the game Tim had been playing. I picked it up and decided that I might as well give it a shot. I had already been in the video store for quite sometime, not being able to find a game I really wanted. I played the game and loved it at first play. I’m not sure if I had rented the game more then once, or had just played it so long that I was able to get fairly far. I had gotten to the Shinra headquarters and was riding up the elevator, fighting a machine that was on the elevator next to me. I was about to send another attack at the machine. After a few minutes I realized my team had not attacked. Neither had the enemy. “that’s strange” I thought. I tapped all the buttons vigorously only to find nothing had changed. Something was wrong with the game. I reset and tried again and again, over and over but the same thing happened each time. I finally took out the disk and examined it. It was scratched all over and I had known that it was scratched badly before, but then realized that the scratching was what had caused the game to apparently freeze, but knowing what I know now, it hadn’t actually freezed. The characters were still jumping up and down in that little way they do when they are in a fight. And the music was still playing, but both my team and the enemy wouldn’t attack or do anything. I took the game back to BlockBuster and told them what was wrong. They said they would send out for another copy, hoping to get it back in a few weeks.

I went week after week, looking for the game I now called “my game”. It was never there. Weeks became months and I asked the people over and over when it would come but they had no answer. I ended up deleting the game from my memory card. Finally it was Christmas. Of course I asked for Final Fantasy 7 and received it.

I started a new game and played over and over, and I can clearly remember one sick day where I spent the whole entire day upstairs playing. My mom would yell at me to stop so I could have lunch “Just one more minute” I would yell. I eventually ended up having lunch upstairs, taking a quick bite of my sandwich before continuing whatever other exciting battle that was about to take place. After an amazingly long time, maybe even about a year, I beat the game.

That is the story.

Although I’d like to tell you that now, many years later, I am happy with my beloved game, I cannot. For about a year after I beat the game, I lost my precious memory card. Anyone who owns a Playstation may be able to understand my pain. It wasn’t just Final Fantasy VII that was on that card, but every single other game I had as well( at that time I only had one memory card. But I’m more careful now. I have about 5 ). For years I’ve struggled with the pain. Once I spent the whole weekend looking in every nook and cranny for my precious memory card. But it was gone. Slowly I recovered. I eventually got a Playstation 2, and so I was able to slowly forget the past. I played and loved Final Fantasy X, and I even started and finished a new game of Final Fantasy VII. But that first one, I’ll never forget. In that first game I spent hour upon hour getting enough battle square points to buy Cloud’s Ultimate Limit Break, I believe it was called Omni Slash. Sleepless nights trying over and over, constantly resetting, to get a gold chocobo, and ultimately, the famous Knights of the Round Summon. All this happened 5 years ago. Even to this day I still have hope that someday I will find it. Even if I don’t find it until I move to college and my mom moves out of the house, I will still and always be overjoyed upon it’s return.

Well, that's the story folks. Like I said, I altered nothing, so it's actually been 7 years since everything happened. And I still feel the same way. Still missing the memory card...still unable to really move on. But I will always have hope. Either by some amazing degree of luck, or in beleiveing maybe someday they'll invent a machine that can find lost memory cards, I still have hope of finding that memory card.

The point is, Final Fantasy VII is the best game in the whole universe and always will be forever and ever and evermore.

If you haven't already, go play it.
