HAWAII: Hawaiian Luau (Day Five - optional)

 

Grade Level/Subject: 6-8, Social Studies                                                          Length: 90 minutes

 

I.  OBJECTIVES:

National Standards for Civics and Government: Standard IV.A.1, IV.B.2 and Standard XXV: Understanding the causes and effects of World War II. Maryland Core Learning Goals: Goal 2, Indicator 2.1.2, and 2.1.3.

 

The student will be able to:

 

    1. Appreciate Hawaiian culture and customs by participating in a Hawaiian luau.
    2. Work in co-operative groups to play various games and activities that will help them explore Hawaii's culture.
    3. Explain the history of the luau and how it features in Hawaiian culture.

 

  1. MATERIALS:

 

  1. PROCEDURE:
    1. Opening
    2. Prior to students arriving, set up food. movie and games. When students arrive, play Hawaiian Luau music as a teaser. (Get students to wear appropriate Hawaiian clothing, if possible).

       

    3. Development
    1. Divide students into groups, have one group play the 'Pin the Apple on the Pig' game. Have apples and pig already printed up, so game can begin immediately. Template and directions for that game are located at:

    3. Have another group do the Paula Pineapple craft. Have pineapple templates already printed for students, so they just have to cut the template out and put together. For this activity you will need scissors, glue and markers. The directions and template for this activity are located at:

    5. The third group will make flowers for their hair. For this activity, you will need: tissue paper, bobby pins, and pipe cleaner. Have the directions for making this already printed up with materials at a table so students can begin this activity. Directions are located at:

    7. When each group is finished their project. Have them switch to another station and do the other assignments, until each group has completed all three assignments.
    8. Pass out the ditto on the 'History of the Luau.' Select certain students to read the article out loud. Lead a discussion on why this custom is important to Hawaiian culture.

      After discussion, it is time to eat the food students have prepared (or order in a Hawaiian pizza from local pizza place or do a combination of both) while they watch Walt Disney movie, Lilo and Stitch.

       

      C.  Closure

         1. WRAP-UP/HOMEWORK:  Thank students for working so hard on the unit and say "aloha." No homework!

       

      IV.  ASSESSMENT

      Students will be evaluated based on participation in group activities and games.
