HAWAII :  Monarchy -- King and Queens of Hawaii (Day Two)

:   6-8, Social Studies                                                            Length:   90 minutes


 

         I.  OBJECTIVES

The students will be able to:


  • Create a timeline of the Hawaiian kings and queens from 1758-1917 in their Interactive Notebooks.
  • Pass out 'Hawaiian History: The Monarchs' dittos from web site, read and discuss it. Students will take their timeline of the kings and queens of Hawaii that they’ve already completed and add 6 (six) major historical world events to it set during that timeframe.
  • Define vocabulary terms from article "Hawaiian History: The Monarchs" in their Interactive Notebooks: reign, monarch, annexed, constitution, heiau, and deposed.
  • Watch video, "The American Experience: Hawaii’s Last Queen," from PBS. Have students write a two diary entries in the "I Witness to History" format and write if they were a Hawaiian in 1893, how they would have felt when Hawaii’s last queen, Lili’uokalani was deposed from the throne by U.S. Marines. Students will have clear narration, and an accurate description of the individual’s feelings.
  • Appreciate native Hawaiian culture and demonstrate the skills learned in previous activities by successfully taking a quiz on the monarchs.
