HAWAII : Monarchy -- King and Queens of Hawaii
(Day Two)

A. Opening
1. On a piece of paper, each student creates a timeline of all of Hawaii’s kings and queens using Hawaiian History: The Monarchs" article for reference.
B. Development
1. Read and discuss "Hawaiian History: The Monarchs" focus on the
following questions:
2. Using timeline students have already done, have them add 10 (ten) historical events to their timeline from world history and contrast and compare those events to the ones occurring in Hawaii. Ask students to define each of the following vocabulary terms from unit in their Interactive Notebooks: annexed, constitution, heiau, reign, monarch and deposed.
3. Watch the PBS video, "The American Experience: Hawaii’s Last Queen." Lead a class discussion on these questions:
-- If you were a
Hawaiian during Queen Lili’uokalani’s reign how would you have felt when the
U.S. Marines landed and took control of the islands?
-- How would you have felt in 1898, when President William McKinley
recognized Hawaii as a part of the United States and Hawaii lost its
sovereignty?
4. Students will take monarchy quiz.
C. Closure
1. WRAP-UP/HOMEWORK: Review what topics you’ve covered today, preview what class will do tomorrow, including any material not covered today. Write down homework activity, which is to be a "I Witness to History" and write two diary entries (describing different moments in time associated with same event) from the viewpoint of person selected (a native Hawaiian.) and their feelings on Hawaii no longer being a sovereign state.
In the diary entries, students should be sure to include facts, clear narration of the historical events, and an accurate description of the feelings of the individual detailing the event.
V. ASSESSMENT
A. Students will be evaluated based on timeline work, participation in class discussions, vocabulary terms, the monarchy quiz and coherent, thoughtful diary entries from the homework.
